Question about welded carrier

I found a Toyota 3rd member with 5.29 gears and a welded carrier pretty cheap on CL. I'm planning an sas swap and was wondering if it would work. I'm concerned I'm misunderstanding something and I want to make sure I don't spend money unnecessarily.

I was thinking of putting manual locking hubs on the front wheels with the welded carrier in that diff. If I'm understanding how locking hubs work I could just switch them to free for normal driving and lock them when I want to crawl. Am I right about that or am I confused about how the manual locking hubs work?

Make sure the teeth aren't chipped, make sure it rotates smoothly, make sure there's no play in the pinion or spider gears. You could take some paint with you and have a look at the gear pattern, if you want to do a little research and learn what a good pattern looks like...
