question for you guys -trade winch for RTT?

so i have a basically brand new warn 9.5ti winch(one pull on it) with 125' of wire, and all electrical cables, hawse fairlead -basically this minus the mobile mount Warn Industries - Ultimate Performance Series: 9.5ti Portable basically a $1200 winch and was thinking about trading it for a used RTT, this one- CVT Cascadia Vehicle Roof Top Tents | Cascadia Vehicle Roof Top Tents $1100

now i have two of these winches, and this one is sitting in my garage and is perfect condition, again only used once. it has a small scratch on the front of it from when it was mounted in the bumper of my old truck. so basically i have no use for this winch at this time, though with my new 94 4runner project i might be using it for that... but with my current 97 4runner being more for search and rescue and geared towards overlanding i have been looking for a nice RTT. the only thing that im hung up on with this is its a 2 man tent, and with 2 small kids id prefer a 4 man tent. but the 2 man tent would be lighter and reduce the weight up top. id prefer the mt shasta tent over the mt bachelor tent and the weight difference is only 5 lbs so it really wouldnt be that much more top heavy...

so what do you guys say?

if i dont get this tent i will at some point get the mt shasta tent from them, as they are fairly local and i could just drive down and pick it up and have the tent i want. and keep my winch for my 94 4runner... but then im having to pay $1400 and if i had to buy a new winch i would not buy a 9.5ti -only because i dont need that much winch and a m8000 would work just fine and they are like $500

so tell me your thoughts and opinions guys

Sell the winch outright and put the cash towards the tent you want.

selling the winch outright would not yield enough to buy the tent i want though... because anything that you sell used(even if in perfect condition and basically never used) is never worth as much as a new one...



side note the guy emailed me back and would take the winch but wants me to put cash down ontop of the winch... i think hes high and yeah no deal...

but please continue giving your imput here, another deal might come around...

I didn't expect you would, but you would still be a lot closer to buying what you really want in both tent and future winch (94) than you are with a smaller (than you want) used tent.

Unless you are going to use this 100% as an overland vehicle going out for weeks on end - I'd sell the spare winch and buy one of these. You can catch them out of season in their clearance sales and really get a bargain. Put the difference on a light weight roof rack. Toss a plastic tote up there with all your gear and roll out. You can use the rack for additional things like a high lift and axe mount, offroad lights, jerry cans etc.

Plus you (or your kids) won't fall off the roof of the truck when you go to take a leak in the middle of the night.

i have several tents... i want a RTT. i can easily remove it with a pulley in my garage and store it there when not in use... and im not about to sell a $900 winch that i could use to buy something that im probably not ever going use as i have like 3 or 4 other tents. im not worried about my kids falling out of the tent, and i can build my own rack thats no issue as i have done several other racks.

In my years of buying, selling and modifying vehicles, I've just come to accept that sometimes you make mistakes and throw money down the crapper. I would sell the winch for whatever you can get and apply that money towards your RTT shopping. The odds of finding someone interested in making that specific trade (especially locally, since neither item is easy to ship) are pretty much nil.
