Question on pending purchase

So, I am looking to buy a 2019 4Runner Limited. I am thinking of replacing the 20" tires with the TRD 17" alloy wheels.

My question is to current 4Runner owners who have a Limited and switched to this size tire, how do you like the switch? Any issues? Likes, dislikes over 20"? I am guessing the ride might be a little softer and more comfortable, but do you loss all of the sharpness in the steering that you tend to get with the 20" tires?

Also, anyone have this: Yakima® - LoadWarrior Roof Cargo Basket (Toyota 4Runner 17-18 Roof Cargo Basket), Do you like it? Does it kill gas mileage?

I was looking into the LoadWarrior and seems like Lo pro mounts + Rola vortex would be a better cargo rack

20's will give you more MPG's to offset the full time 4x4... I switched to 18's and really like it for what i use it for. I will never switch to 20's, simply because I do offroad and would like more ruber than wheels. to each is own.

i swapped the 20" wheels out for 17" vtx rogues and would certainly do it again. I've only lost about .5 mpg, but the handling has definitely improved. the car seems more planted and bumpy 50-60mph corners on my commute that used to be kind of sketchy with the 20s are no longer an issue with the 17s. I attribute this to both added contact patch of the 265/70s and the vtx wheel offset that seems to have widened the track a bit.

also, keep in mind i went with c load ridge grapplers, which likely accounts for most of the mpg loss.

I swapped the other way. I have both 17's with offroad tires and 20's with street tires. I would keep the 20's for highway and moderate offroad duty. BUT - you need big enough tires on them to soften them up a bit. I have 275/60/20's. They're just a bit wider and slightly taller than 285/70/17s. The naming convention doesn't match the physical size. The tires are dirt cheap in that size, quiet, light weight, balance out great, and make a perfect highway tire.

My only wish was that someone would make a narrower 33-34" tire for the 20" wheels. Like a 255/70/20 in a P rated highway tread.

Gonna put it to you this way. If you wanted a good on road handling suv you should have bought an x5 or something. Instead you bought/or are buying a offroader disguised as a grocery getter. Get the 17's and don't worry about how fast you can take corners, it's not what the truck was meant to do best.
