I guess this is more out of curiosity than anything. I had my radio warranted by the dealership through my extended warranty plan. I don’t know the ins and outs of the warranty but after they replaced my radio I had to reinstall my expeditions mount for my phone and iPad. When I pulled the radio out the date of manufacture is August 2015 on the new radio they installed. Would a new radio be sitting on a shelf somewhere for that long or do you think they installed a used one. Radio works just wondering more than anything.

I can still buy new old stock parts for my 1974 FJ40. Been out of production a long time. So - yeah, very possible they've had that radio sitting on a shelf since then.

Toyota has a Reman Program with the Manufacturer of their Radios. You likely received a Reman Unit that was originally produced in 2015.

Yes, more than likely a refurb unit. Guarantee your warranty says nothing about "new" parts only, but covers that "certified reman" units are an acceptable replacement by Toyota (or any manufacturer really)

Toyota's replacement radios are reman'd/refurb'd units by the original manufacturer.
What that basically means is that they have a 3rd party contract with JBL, Panasonic, LG, etc. or whoever makes the unit in your vehicle. Your unit gets sent back as a core and they send out a "new" unit from them. Sometimes there's a couple sitting at the distribution center, but the process for ordering them is different than just ordering a Toyota part off the system. They also send back any CDs you may have left in the headunit usually after they get the core and refurbish it, though SD cards are a little spottier on getting those back.
I don't know if I have seen a fresh radio to put in a vehicle? Maybe on the first model year of a new headunit where they may not have a whole lot of refurbished units, but I can't recall.
