Questionable ground clearance and concerns?

Told my old man I want a brush guard for Father's Day.

Brush-guards have a natural pivot point under the front bumper. That does a couple thing for:

1) Reduce ground clearance under the bumper (one of your concerns).
2) Because it protrudes in front of the bumper, you decrease the approach angle.
3) In a front collision, the brush-guard will pivot back towards the vehicle and like a jaw biting down, it will crunch the bumper, grille and radiator more than if the impact was absorbed by the bumper.

Based on the above and your concern about ground clearance, you may want to look into an ARB or Shrockworks bumper instead.

Okki

You don't know what you're talking about and you've obviously never spent time in the cab of a 1999 Isuzu Trooper on a challenging offroad trail. Or anywhere for that matter. Line up your 4R against me and my Trooper. You pick the trail. See what happens. I'll take you to places your ride won't even fit in. BTW, my "POS" has locking diff, Torque on Demand Electronically controlled 4WD. Push of a button, I'm in traction-sensing 4WD. Do some homework. My "POS" is waiting for you. Then you can help me write my letter.

LOL. I guess you should keep the Trooper.

As far I can tell, the trooper wasn't offered with a rear locker, only an LSD option. That center differential (Torque on Demand Electronically controlled 4WD) isn't going to do much for you off road.

2013Trail, one of the first posts you made here was about the 4Runner being underpowered. That showed me you apparently did not test drive very many vehicles in that class or you would have known it was very competitive.

Now you get on here and ask if anyone has any concerns about the ground clearance not being "What Toyota advertised." THEN you go on about writing a letter to Toyota (good luck with that) and THEN you start expounding on the virtues of your '99 Trooper having gobs of ground clearance (I had one - I knew you were wrong) and challenging guys to a trail race! You also mentioned a '99 4Runner I believe you said you owned. You had both a '99 4Runner and a '99 Isuzu?

There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here who know a thing or two about 4WD's and many other things. I suggest if you want to be taken seriously here, listen to the guys who have been here awhile (that means more than 44 posts) because they might have fun with you but ATEOTD they will help you with whatever you need.

You're welcome to follow me any time you want. If you can. Or if you can keep up. But you will be following.

Well, get yourself a stock TE, give me a call and follow me out into the bush. You can lead the way if you want. But I'll pass you. You'll be pleading for mercy before the day is over.

My choice of trails you drive a stock TE and you follow me in my stock Isuzu Trooper.

How tall are you?

The Trooper S model, which I have, came with the locker. I didn't order anything special. Doesn't matter if it was optional or not. All I said was that mine had it because someone pointed out that the TE had a locker.

If I wanted to keep the Trooper I wouldn't have bought a new vehicle.

BTW, the TOD works fine in snow, on slippery surfaces and in mild offroad use. That's what it was intended for. The Trooper has 4L. One more thing, the LSD works in either 4H or 4L.

I’ll respond to your comments/ questions in the order you wrote them. I’ll do it in three separate posts due to website restrictions on the length of posts:
1. Regarding your doubt about my test drives: I test drove all the vehicles that I was interested in and that met what I wanted out of a 4X4. Those vehicles were the 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4door, 2013 and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and Limited, 2013 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition, and 2013 Nissan Xterra Offroad. Just to remind you at least two other members of T4R.org responded to my post on the TE being underpowered and they too said they thought it was.

2. I did NOT ask if anyone had any concerns about “What Toyota advertised.” This is what I asked in my original post: “What are your all concerns, if any regarding ground clearance on the stock TE, and have you had any probs with it?” No questions about advertising.
3. I did not say my Trooper had gobs of ground clearance. What I did infer is that across the board it has better ground clearance than the TE. I also admitted my error about the lowest ground clearance measurements.
4. I didn’t “go on” about writing a letter to Toyota—it was a short concise statement. Said once and only once.
5. I didn’t challenge anyone to a trail race. I did challenge anyone to come out and compare their stock4R offroad to my Trooper. Call it a race if you want. I was just trying to make a point. Someone called my Trooper a POS and you're crawling up my you know what because you're bothered with my comments about the 4R.

6. Yes I mentioned a 99 4Runner. That was an error in my original post because I didn’t pay attention to what I typed (yeah go ahead and jump on me for saying this too). I only have the Trooper. No intentional misleading intended. I’m sure you’ve said one thing and meant another at least 10 times in your life.
7. I am also very knowledgable about 4WD offroading and I am very experienced at doing it. About the only thing I haven't don offroad is ford deep rivers or try to crawl over huge boulders.
8. I don’t expect you to take me seriously because you are too emotional. Your face is probably beet red right now what with you speedily typing in such an amped-up state of mind.
9. Finally, I believe I have seeked to tap the knowledge and experience base on this website. I have not been disrespectful, intentionally misleading, or maliciously challenging. Somebody bashed my Trooper, I accepted the challenge and said let's compare in the brush.

You know you can write more than one thought in a reply, right? 17 replies to your own thread and it's not even a build thread?

I didn't intend for the thread to be so long. But I was trying to adhere to the website rules which state the posts should be no more than five lines long including the space between sentences.

I have written hundreds of long posts to answer legitimate questions and I have never heard of website restrictions on posts. PM's maybe but not regular posts.
I absolutely did not ask you a question except in jest (and incredulity) about the vehicles you said you owned. I ask very few questions in general and after reading your posts I doubt if you could even answer an easy question from me. Enjoy your 4Runner.

"lost credibility" One more thing, you will find that I always try to show respect to everybody on these threads. I expect the same but I can dish out the insults too. Even with humor injected. I know you guys are proud of your 4Rs and I respect that. I should get the same respect. But again, anytime any of you want to have the argument face-to-face aka on the trail in your stock 4R versus my Trooper, come on out and let's do it. Bullhead City, AZ. I pick the trail. You follow. Then you pick the trail....I'll be home first. Oh, you can give Joe Isuzu a ride back to the fort.

Yeah well that wasn't meant to be insulting. I doubt I will be making the trip to AZ from VA for a trail ride, as I have a friend with one here to compare it to, but thanks for the invite!

Glad you liked Joe Isuzu:p

By the way 1Engineer, KCcarguy and to the guy who's worried about how tall I am, if you like I'll delete every post on this thread that I made. I'll delete the whole thread if I can if that will help you all to sleep at night.

In short...

please...

I wrote Toyota a letter saying that my TE is underpowered and needs a 6L V8 with about 450hp and 450 torque, should come stock with 37" mud terrain tires and a 3" lift, front live-axle option, locking front, rear, and center diffs, steel bumpers front and rear, and a snorkel.

I eagerly await their response and wonder if I can trade my current TE towards its purchase.

"You can always lift the suspension and add after market heavier skid plates." I bought the vehicle with the hopes that I could use it in the stock configuration--for the most part.

BTW, told the wife today that I want sliders for Father's Day. Told daughter I want new tires for Father's Day. Told my old man I want a brush guard for Father's Day. Told my mom I want a Canvasback cargo cover for Father's Day. Then we'll talk about my birthday!

Well that was a quick change...again.:zoom:

Rules: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/annou...-statement/5809-rules-toyota-4runner-org.html

10. No creepy or gigantic sigs
Even though they are harmless, please do not use sigs that trace and display info about the viewer's IP address, location, etc. Also, so that our members don't have to constantly scroll down past gigantic sigs, please keep your sigs within the following ranges:

a) No more than 5 lines of text (including empty lines)
b) No pic taller than 200 pixels or wider than 500 pixels.

I think you misunderstood the rule, that applies to signatures not posts. Kudos for actually reading the rules, I sincerely mean that! This is the first time I read it and only because grumpy Greg called you out on it :)

Okki

This is why we call brush guards "damage multipliers". A true hard core off roader like the OP would already know this though. Unless he's exaggerating on the internet, but nobody ever does that right?
