Questionable ground clearance and concerns?

This is why we call brush guards "damage multipliers".

I always cringe when people think an off road bumper (which is a metal thingy made to a smaller profile than the plastic stock bumper and meant to take serious pounding and not break--as well as serve as an attachment point for winches, lights, and recovery stuff) is the same thing as a brush guard (chromed plastic POS that makes the front overhang even bigger).

Kind of the nerf bar/step vs. slider argument and those idiotic cages you can put over the front and rear lights.

how tall are you?

I didn't know they stacked shit that tall!

2. I did NOT ask if anyone had any concerns about “What Toyota advertised.” This is what I asked in my original post: “What are your all concerns, if any regarding ground clearance on the stock TE, and have you had any probs with it?” No questions about advertising.
3. I did not say my Trooper had gobs of ground clearance. What I did infer is that across the board it has better ground clearance than the TE. I also admitted my error about the lowest ground clearance measurements.
4. I didn’t “go on” about writing a letter to Toyota—it was a short concise statement. Said once and only once.
5. I didn’t challenge anyone to a trail race. I did challenge anyone to come out and compare their stock4R offroad to my Trooper. Call it a race if you want. I was just trying to make a point. Someone called my Trooper a POS and you're crawling up my you know what because you're bothered with my comments about the 4R.

------------------
The first line in your original post:

Toyota claims the 4RTE has 9.6" minimum ground clearance...

How does this not directed your questions to what Toyota has advertised?

------------------
...Toyota markets it as a specialized offroad vehicle but it has 3 inches less clearance under the motor than my stock 1999 Isuzu Trooper. And nowhere on my Trooper is the ground clearance less than 9 1/2 inches and nowhere is there any piece of skid plate chassis or anything else under 12 inches of clearance that's four feet long like the gas tank or three feet wide like the engine skid plate on the Toyota...

If this doesn't sound like you are suggesting "gobs" of ground clearance, then I don't know what would. Also, how is this not another attempted blow to Toyota's advertising/marketing?

------------------
Line up your 4R against me and my Trooper.

You're welcome to follow me any time you want. If you can. Or if you can keep up. But you will be following.

Well, get yourself a stock TE, give me a call and follow me out into the bush. You can lead the way if you want. But I'll pass you. You'll be pleading for mercy before the day is over.

My choice of trails you drive a stock TE and you follow me in my stock Isuzu Trooper.

anytime any of you want to have the argument face-to-face aka on the trail in your stock 4R versus my Trooper, come on out and let's do it.

That's a lot of non-challenges there buddy.

Why don't you just drop the defensive attitude and just let this one die. Your entire thread is full of contradictions and taunting others here to a challenge, what are you trying to compensate for? :)

Besides, I'm pretty sure Greg can engineer a way to beat you through any trail run in a Prius with just an abacus, a measuring tape, some shoelace, a pack of bubble gum.

First off, your Isuzu Rodeo is a late 90's GM vehicle... those NEVER Had problems right? I mean the vacuum operated transfer cases with 9ft vacuum lines running from the transfercase to the solenoid under the battery tray NEVER burned out in multiple spots since it went right next to the exhuast! Or the underpowered pitiful excuses of the chopped V8's they called their Vortec V6s!

Also its more of an apples to oranges comparision. A more accurate comparision would be your Isuzu vs. a 3rd Gen which had more clearance stock than both the 4th Gen and 5th gen 4Runners. They also came fairly capable and ready to go off the lot like your Isuzu, just a bit more reliable; though those Rodeos are great 4x4's in general, they just suffer from late 90's GM syndrome.

Oh by the way... your V6 4WD? guess what it technically does have a front locker! Its called the ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect,) it LOCKS the front right shaft to the diff to engage 4WD! Sorry, I know its nit picking, but I figured if we're going to be all technical and pickin' the flies from the crap. Heheh

Point being, the 4th gen & 5th gen aren't as tall as the older 90's era SUVs because more soccer moms buy them and want better ingress and egress. As I said before, where do they get their measurement from? I would suspect its from the main frame rail and not the other crap hanging down. The stock 4Runner is very capable off-road and aside from probably ripping up your running boards, will match or exceed many similar SUVs. You are barking up the wrong tree if you want to blame Toyota for that, blame the fat soccer moms and fat guys who wanna feel manly because they can't climb into a 1in taller truck without a heart attack! Oh don't forget their greaseball kids too...

If you wanted an SUV with Toyota reliability and off-road capability they make the FJ Cruiser for that market, the 4Runner is a COMPROMISE between the soccer mom/lazy fat bastards of the world who just mall crawl and hit up Mc Donalds who should be buying CUVs and those few that want a real SUV that can handle it off-road.

Honestly though, the stock 4Runner is fairly capable off-road. I took my 4th gen V8 off-roading for a while with stock Dunflops and just the SW bumper for a while until I installed my lift and 33's and it did a pretty good job on its own; aside from munching up the running boards... but that's with every SUV. The TRAC/VSC system works pretty well in its own right, granted its a reactive system and not predictive like lockers; but it allows Toyota to give it more off-road capability without investing lots of money in hardware 95% of customers won't ever use or probably break trying to use.

By the way 1Engineer, KCcarguy and to the guy who's worried about how tall I am, if you like I'll delete every post on this thread that I made. I'll delete the whole thread if I can if that will help you all to sleep at night.

Don't do that, stirring up the "establishment" means you're doing something right. And good on you for standing your ground.

I wrote Toyota a letter saying that my TE is underpowered and needs a 6L V8 with about 450hp and 450 torque, should come stock with 37" mud terrain tires and a 3" lift, front live-axle option, locking front, rear, and center diffs, steel bumpers front and rear, and a snorkel.

I eagerly await their response and wonder if I can trade my current TE towards its purchase.

LMAO! Well, you are creative!

Why do you all continue to feed this troll?? It's a waste of time and energy and will certainly contribute to your eventual diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. :boink:

“First off, your Isuzu Rodeo is a late 90's” It’s a Trooper.

“those NEVER Had problems right?” Of course I have. I have the burning oil problem that another member mentioned. Had something to do with the way the piston rings were designed. But other than for normal wear and tear like CV joints, brakes, flushing the tranny, etc, it has never had any work done on it.

“Or the underpowered pitiful excuses of the chopped V8's…” Can’t speak for any other Trooper owner but mine is right peppy. Always has been, even now at 160K miles. I have never considered it to be underpowered. Lots of grunt offroad too. It’s not an mpg wizard however.

“guess what it technically does have a front locker!” All I know is that in the Specifications table in the service manual it only shows the rear diff as having a locker. But I haven’t had any probs with my diffs either.

As for the rest of your comments, you’re probably right.

Perhaps the trolls are the ones doing the feeding? I never intended this thread to turn into this monster. I originally asked one simple question.

"Why don't you just drop the defensive attitude and just let this one die." Sorry eddiebx but the defensive attitude is coming at me from all sides, along with anger and anything else you guys can throw at me. There's no contradictions in what I said. They might exist in your mind so you can justify a super post like you just made. I'm more than happy to let this thread die. Seems like everyone else isn't.

:baby::baby:"Besides, I'm pretty sure Greg can engineer a way to beat you through any trail run in a Prius with just an abacus, a measuring tape, some shoelace, a pack of bubble gum." :baby:

Fine, have him hook you up with one then give me a call. I'll be very interested in seeing you shift into double bubble.

My last comment on this thread: I am not "Thai" whoever that is. But I'm assuming he's an ex-member who you bashed into oblivion.:roadkill: I promise to be politically correct from here on out.
