So what will I need to look at in the 2nd Gen trucks. I'm up to speed on the 3rd gens but not so much the 2nd's. this is what I was looking at for a friend. I know all the normal mechanical issues etc, but do they have the Pink Milkshake Issue. Do they have Lockers in 2nd Gen(I don't think so right).

Give me the dirty and issues to look for in the 2nd gen please. The sooner the better.

well

right off the bat I had to replace rear axel seals, a common problem or so I am told,
the oil pan gasket and the rear main seal is a PITA to ge to since you basicaly have to jack up the whole motor I also went ahead and did rear brakes front diff seal, and intake gasket.

all fairly common stuff. If who ever buys the truck is not a wrencher, expect to sink at least a K getting it up to par

depending on what motor it has in it you may need to look at headgaskets

so after the price the the truck
three sets of rims
new tires
rear brakes
intake gasket
headgasket
timing belt
front dif seal
wheel bearing
and fresh oil change

I am into my 95 about 4500... heres hoping
these are simply old trucks that wlll run as long as you are willing to spend money

keep in mind only a toyota onwer will complain about their truck only making it to 215 k before having a major problem....

Good luck on your 4Runner hunt. If you google your questions most have been answered.

My advice when buying any used vehicle. Expect to sink 1 to 2 thousand more than you paid for it. No matter how well maintained it's been you will always find something to fix - it's just one of Murphy's Laws.

If it was in fact as clean and in the mechanical order the ad claimed, then that was a solid deal (assuming it was a clean title).

Do your research first and make sure you have cash in hand so when the right one comes up, you aren't delaying on pulling the trigger. That said, when shopping for a 20 year old truck, DON'T rush and make a bad deal.

And like Riff said, no matter how clean and well maintained it is, you will find things you need/want to do to it. My '93 was super clean, but I'm working my way through it taking care of some little things (which adds up quickly).

There is actually a thread about what to look for in these trucks, but here are a few things off the top of my head: whichever the engine, they are notoriously underpowered and get fairly crappy mileage because they're pushing too much weight for their power level; the 5-spd is more dependable than the auto, which can develop shifting problems; there are no factory locker options; the rear window mechanism tends to rust badly and make the window slow down and possibly stop working altogether; the well-known V6 head gasket issue, mainly caused by the rather bizarre exhaust crossover pipe that cooks the back of the heads where it wraps around; sagging rear springs. Now on the plus side, they are good-looking trucks (IMO) with a solid ladder frame and workhorse drivetrain--the T-case and axles are quite strong and durable. They hold their value extremely well. Once you get past the lack of power, they're great trucks that will take you just about anywhere, and with a few mods, quite a bit further still. I've been through three of them, and I am once again looking for the next one (although I have no intention of keeping the engine that it comes with). Best of luck to your friend's search!
