quick antenna question

For converting me power to manual antenna, do I NEED the toyota antenna assembly?

I found this metra one stating it's for the tacoma.

I don't however want a long mast, so I wanted to put this one on instead. However, the stock antenna looks like it has a male threaded end. Most stubby aftermarkets have female. Despite saying it's for the tacoma too which is weird. Can I just get a threaded nippled to put in there or is there a reason it needs to be the other way?

Mendozer - I believe 2nd and 3rd generation 4Runners only came with power antennas, 4th generation have the antenna in the glass.

I just replaced my broken power antenna with the Taco assembly. You can get shorter masts but your reception may suffer. You may notice how the antenta mast sits on the 4Runner, your power unit's mast isn't perpendicular to the ground. It sort of has a weird position. The Taco Antenna Assembly kind of bug me with respect to positioning but after looking at some 4Runners, it probably is close to the original power antenna positioning. I would see if the Taco Antenna Assembly has a mast length you like. Plus having a separate mast helps if your mast gets bent (damn kids) and you don't have to replace the entire assembly. Remember you are working around the passenger air bag assembly.
If you are still reading my long reply, you are going to need some fender screw grommets because you are going to break some. The stuff on Amazon isn't the right size. The stock ones have PA6 on them. I found them on eBay. Au-ve-co Products 21605 nylon screw grommets.

After my long post I think I understand you your question. I don't think you could use any nipple because the antenna relies on that connection for conductivity. I think their are some short Toyota antennas options for the Taco antenna assembly menitioned earlier.

I ordered the same exact metra for my 96. Bolted right in and I also just ordered a stubby whip antenna that bolted into place. Haven't looked back since nor have had any issues. Only hard part is routing the cord behind the dash.

I just grabbed a basic metra one for now until i find the one i really really want. Came with 5 different universal adapters for all cars and just screwed it into place. Worked just fine.

Super easy mod. The only hard part for me was finding the plug from the new antenna as it was behind all the "stuff" under the passenger airbag.

Also, don't pry up on the leather foam console part. These babies are too old and I messed mine up a bit

The metra part is the antenna splicer. We have a rear and front antenna. This is to merge them both to your radio (aftermarket mainly)

Its on the OEM radio, but if your aftermarket radio only has one antenna port like every other one I've seen, then you need this thing. Often times if the car has two, installers will leave one unplugged then radio reception sucks (like my wife's subie)
