Quick manual hub question

I rebuilt the pair of manual hubs in the pic for my 95 4runner and am getting ready to put them on. I don't know anything about manual hubs but following threads on some of the forums, they were easy to rebuild. My question is this,
the inner splines showing in the picture, the inner side I guess, do not spin by hand even in the free position. I would assume they would not spin by hand in the locked position, but would turn when the clutch was not engaged.
Did I muck it up? or do I not understand how they work. BTW, they seem to operate correctly on the bench, looks correct to me.

it is suppose to move with the spline. once its on the hub you will be able select correctly when you turn the paddle it will engage the clutching to lock in the hub.

So I put the hubs on the other day, sure enough, my doubts were correct, each of the shafts would turn whether locked or unlocked. It appears that the
clutch is not completely disengaging from the splines which would allow them to free spin. I took the hubs apart again and checked and rechecked the springs vs how other people have done it on the forums. I swear I did it correctly. The only part I have my doubts on is the direction of the large spring, except for the white paint on the tip, I can't tell the "flat side" from the other. Looks the same to me. Does the white tip go against the back of the dial, or against the clutch? I thought it went against the back of the dial.

I know it's simple, but something is wrong, any input?

Did you put new gaskets on? I had the same issue messing with mine. When I put the new gasket on everything spaced out like it was supposed to. Before I put the gasket on, I had the same issue as you.

No need for gaskets. Silicone works better for a water tight seal.
The gaskets are so thin that it's not going to make a difference on the hub function.

I had purchased new gaskets but had misplaced when it was time to rebuild, used silicone instead. Have since found the gaskets.
Just got home, so maybe for kicks and grins I'll do a test run on the bench with the gaskets on.

So I put the gasket on, tried it out, no good. So I doubled up the gaskets, again no good. With two gaskets and a bit of pushing on the inner hub, it will spin in the free position, though there is contact, not completely free.

Something is just not adding up. Will take pictures shortly and upload.
Another set of eyes is always helpful.

Here's some pic's of the hub.

Are your CVs fully seated with the splined washer and lock clip in place?

I AM DONE WITH THIS SET OF HUBS!!!

So I completely tore them down, every piece carefully cleaned, inspected, lightly greased, new gaskets and reassembled. Same thing, clutch/paw will not fully disengage so the inner hub will not turn freely.

Only thing I can think of is mismatched dial faces. Got nothing else, everything else is in near excellent condition.

Will probably sell them as parts, then go to my fairly local salvage yard and pickup those $50 replacements.

On the plus side, I am now an expert at rebuilding manual hubs.

So I bought another set of hubs at the local salvage yard, kinda pricey at $100 bucks but what are you gonna do?

Actually very clean, am very happy. Only took me about 30 minutes per hub to completely breakdown, degrease, inspect, regrease and reassemble, they work like a charm. After carefully comparing the old hubs with the new ones, it appears that the issue may be with the clutch/pawl springs. I think they may not have enough tension to fully disengage the clutch from the inner hub.

As soon as I find some replacement springs, I'll probably just kind them as spares.
