Quick overview of 3rd gen transfer cases & associated driveline?

Just curious if someone can edumacate me quick on my '00 driveline components. I had an old Exploder and an older Land Cruiser w/ manual lock-outs up front (I ditched the Ford's "automatic" ones), so that's what I'm used to.

How does our T4R work? w/ the Exploder, just engaging the 4hi/4lo (with button - ugh) would engage the front hubs, but to disengage them, you'd have to hit the button for 2hi, and then go in reverse for about 10'. Stupid. So, what's the scoop with the 4Runner? Are the front hubs always engaged? Or as soon as there's power to the front driveshaft, do they engage? How do they disengage? I noticed I can spin the front driveshaft by hand when I'm under the truck (and it's in 2hi, obviously). I assume this is normal?

Thanks in advance. I feel like the pesky new kid with a million stupid questions, so my apologies. I'm not a moron; I'm just starting from the middle of the book instead of the beginning ... LOL

Awesome, thank you. :) Great write-up, too.

Hopefully I'm on my way to completing my n00b training ... let's see, what other 'virgin' questions can I ask ... ? LOL

No reverse necessary. Look at the Sticky threads at the top of the section and I am sure 90% of your questions can be answered by searching.

Well, you might want to start with the sticky's. The tutorial and document reference sticky would have led you to the transfer case thread. Then you don't have to post noob questions.

That and use the search function. That would have netted you the transfer case thread as well. Always search before asking a question. chances are goo it has been answered before.

True, and I bet I probably searched myself into zero results was my problem, being too specific. ;)
