Quick pull to one side while hard braking

My 1998 runner does a quick pull to one side when braking hard. Lower control arm bushings or something else?

My guess is a caliper issue. Make sure both are working correctly and are not sticking. If pulls left for example, either the left caliper is sticking or the right caliper isn't engaging. Same me goes if pulling right.

If you suspect it's your control arm bushing : have a friend or a camera, record yourself braking. If your wheel suddenly moves forward or backwards while braking or at the end, the bushings are shot.
 
I literally just got over the same issue, but on my GX470. New front calipers didn’t fix it. Upper control arms did, the bushings were toast.

I've had this happen 3 times. Each time it was a failed rear axle seal where gear oil had soaked one rear drum causing uneven braking on the rear end. Take a look behind your rear tires and look for the oil drips/spray on the back of the tires.
 
I appreciate the replies. Both calipers are new. It has new rear axle seals, as well. I'll check the drum adjustment and see if I can get someone to look at the front of the truck while I'm stopping.
 
Do the 3rd Gens utilize slide pins in the calipers? If so, be sure the boots are still there and in good shape and that the pins were greased as well.

Also, check your tie rod ends and wheel bearings.

In addition to adding speed bleeders and new hoses I'll be taking my pins out, polishing, and greasing them to try to cure a small occasional pull to the right.

Mine had new seals too. They can be hard to seat and will leak again shortly if not done perfect. When you go to check the drum adjustment it'll be obvious if they are leaking though.

Easiest way to adjust the rear drums is to jack up the rear end, put it in neutral and spin the wheels. Adjust the gears by removing the rubber cap on the back with a small screwdriver until you hear the pad contacting the drum, then back off one click.

I was also told that pulling your e-brake to stop the vehicle a few times will also adjust the brakes, although not exactly sure how that's supposed to work. I guess you do it forwards, and then in reverse.

Also check the flex hoses attached to your calipers. I thought I had a seized caliper once, only to discover when I disconnected the line that the caliper was fine, but the hose (which looked OK on the outside) had collapsed on itself and wasn't allowing fluid through. If that was the case you'd notice no fluid, or not much fluid coming out as you bleed them.
 
I am chasing the same issue.

Does your steering wheel correct itself the opposite direction of the pull? Mine pulls right under hard braking as well, but the steering wheel corrects left. It will brake mostly in a straight line once the steering wheel corrects left. If I brake lightly and keep the nose from diving it brakes in a straight line and doesn't pull at all, but there's a threshold where it will suddenly jerk right.

I suspect LCA bushings or slipping essentric bolts based on the solution that OP came to.

I have rebuilt the brakes front and rear, installed new UBJs, LBJs & inner/outer tie rods, replaced rear axle seals & wheel bearings the correct way, replaced rack bushings with poly, and installed Bilsteins on all 4 corners. So, there aren't too many parts that are suspect anymore.

Hi folks, it's time to ask the old question one more time :)
My 98 4 runner pulls to the left every time I brake. Actually, even during the moderate breaking the driver side front tire squeals like I'm doing the emergency breaking.
At the same time both rotors are equally hot, so the brakes are working.

Today I've checked the Pistons on both sides and none is seized. There is no uneven wear on rotors and pads.

I've also cleaned the rear drums and adjusted the pads. And I've bled the system after. Nothing has changed.

I have new bushings in UCA, new struts, LBJ, tie rod ends. Lca bushings are looking alive and well.
Alignment was done just 600 or so km ago.
I'm pretty sure that the problem is on the brakes side, but I don't know what else to do.
Need help here.
 
Still having same problem after all new brakes, rear axle seals. Thought it was bushings but noticed passenger side(side it’s jerking to when breaking) front tire caliper seemed dirtier than drivers, wheel dirtier too. Assumed brake dust, checked temp on calipers/rotors after a drive and passenger side both were little over 10 degrees hotter than drivers side. Are they dragging on passenger side or maybe drivers side hose is collapsed internally like someone said? I’ll recheck the rear tires to see if seal is leaking again, never noticed oil last time it was leaking though
 
If your front hoses have any cracks at all replace them.

That was my pull. My passenger front was cracked enough the drivers side did most of the braking.

I agree with the collapsed brake hose comment. I've had this happen nearly a dozen times over the years and at least 6-7 of those times it was a failed brake hose. At least 4 of those times were on a Toyota 4x4.
 
Thanks for the advice. I checked the list and seems like gut multiple hoses and some hard line. I’ll get under there and see what ones look bad. Oem hoses aren’t cheap. Might just go aftermarket

I've just replaced both front hoses. Nothing has changed. Drivers wheel squeals like crazy under moderate braking.

So, it's not the caliper, it's not the hose. What else could it be?
