Quick question about 4WD Driveshaft

Without having to mount a gopro under my rig, can someone tell me if the 4WD driveshaft is spinning while in 2WD?

If you have the J shifter, NO

Shifter with Lo, N and Hi: YES as it is an all wheel drive (4WD button on the side of the lever). Please correct me if I am wrong.

The j shift one still does some moving also. I have no idea at what rate or with how much force but mine is always in a different orientation every time I check it even though it moves freely by hand.

I'm pretty sure this isn't correct. I have a 2002 (and the Lo, N, Hi shifter with the 4WD button and center diff lock button) and was under the truck yesterday greasing the driveshaft. With the system in 2WD, trans in P, handbrake on, truck off, the front driveshaft can be spun by hand, meaning the front diff and transfer case are both disconnected, leaving the driveshaft free to "float".

It is my understanding that when the 4WD button is pressed the front diff and transfer case engage the front driveshaft at both ends. Then you also have the center diff lock button which can also lock the front and rear driveshafts to the same speed.

It will spin a bit at speed, but not a match or directly locked with anything. The fluid drag in the front diff from the driver's side axle spins the front diff a little bit, causing the front prop shaft to spin some.

/\ /\ /\ I have observed this happening before. There's nothing holding it in place, and some very slight bearing drag making it turn. So it turns gently.

It has the H/L and 4WD button shifter, not a mechanical J shifter.

There are multiple electronics and what i recall is a motor on the transfercase - which i assume engages front drive electronically when 4WD is pressed. This is not an AWD system like the Landcruiser 80 and newer series that only has H/L options on the transfercase with a center diff lock.

That is from a 1997 Limited model. The other transfer case option for that year was a j shift transfer case.
