quick question about rear diff lock...

When I press the button to engage mine, on the side of the shifter, the light is constant. It does not blink. I have a '98, but I would think they would be alike. You might have a problem.

I saw a rocker switch mounted below the left AC vent labeled, "RR Diff Lock" on a 98 LTD. It was no where near the shifter. Do you think this was an after market add-on?
What's a good way to locate this option?

Due to factory safeties, the locker can only be activated while the truck is in 4LO and is moving at less than 5MPH. If you are following those guidelines and it's still not engaging then you have a problem.

On my '98 Limited I have one shifter that does the normal Parking, Drive, Reverse, Low, and so on. I then have another shifter that has the "RR Diff Lock" button on the side of it. This shifter shifts into H4, N, and L4.

Yes, I know this isn't my 4runner, but it shows you where I'm talking about. Mine is on the side of this shifter.
Also make sure that you are stoppped and that it is in the correct position.

Are you sure that's what that button is for? Its not the factory location on ANY model 4Runner. I also have a 98 Limited with both shifters. The shifter on the left has a diagram on it that looks like this:

Then the button on the side of the shifter just says 4WD and is your 4HI. You have to push this button to engage 4HI and then from there you use the shifter for 4LO. Could you post a picture of your button?

Oh I see what you are saying. I guess I don't have a rear differential locker. I must have been mistaken and thought that every '98 Limited came with it.
Here is the shifter.

So what does the rear differential locker do? Was it another option on the '98 Limited? When I press that button, "4WD", doesn't it shift into 4WD? LO, HI?

On the multi-mode autos of the '99-00 Limiteds the button on the 4wd shifter is the center diff lock which provides part time 4wd similar to AWD,pull that lever back and you are in 4hi.
To engage the diff lock you must stop the vehicle,put it in N then push the 4wd lever to the right and then forward then put in drive and go on your merry way.
The is the "grey wire mod" which allows diff lock operation in any mode including 2wd.
I'll post it here for those who are curious.

I'm sorry,I should have been clearer and separated my statement about the Limited's tranny since the diff lock operation is the same on all such equipped Runners. ('96-'00 only)
That which I described is for the rear diff lock and if the Runner is equipped with one it will have that RR DIFF LOCK button to the side left side of the wheel.

Bumping a very old thread here. I looked around, and this was the closest I could find. The issue the original poster describes is exactly what I'm experiencing. I put my truck in N, then pop it into 4Low......then hit my "RR DIFF LOCK" button. The "LOCK" light will flash - but it keeps flashing. And my 'ABS' light pops on solid at the same time. No matter if I'm stopped, moving slow, or whatever - the "LOCK" light keeps flashing and the 'ABS' light stays on. Switch back to normal, and all the lights go out.
Is my locker just gummed up somehow - from lack of use? Any ideas?

Yeah, that might do it. I tried that a bit in my back alley - but there's no room to serpentine.

Rebumping an old topic sorry, but I haven't had the chance to use my button on my 98 limited. But if I use the 4hi button on the second shifter and make a turn, my inside rear wheel will spin faster than it need to (as if differential lock is engaged) is this normal?
