Quick Tire Buying Question

I've done my research so I'm not trying to be lazy...but I'm a little thrown off by what I've read and looking for some clarification. I need new tires for my 97 limited with 16s. I want the largest tire, without rubbing, that I can get which are 32's after researching. HOWEVER...alls I keep seeing is 265/75 this 265/75 that. Isn't 265 the width? Is this in almost every recommendation by coincidence? I want a 32 that will be good in snow so I was going to go a hair skinnier. Could I go bigger diameter with skinnier? (ie 255/85/16) for example? Thanks guys

Yes you can go skinnier and still get a 32", 255/85/16 and 255/75/17 are both 32" tires. I have 255/75/17 tires and I'm really digging them so far

Cool thanks for the info. But your saying 255/85 on a 16in rim is 32? Cause everyone's saying 265/75/16 is 32in. Again I thought there's no relation between the 265 (or 255) and the 75 cause only the 75 corresponds to 32in? I know I'm missing something just can't figure it out

Never mind...the middle number is a multiplier to the first number to get a ratio I see. Only other question is if the tire is skinnier can we go bigger or does the rubbing occur due to more than 32in regardless does anyone know?
