Quicker steering?

Is there a way to quicken the steering on an '02 by changing the steering rack ratio? I always wonder how race teams quicken the steering from stock when they build up a race car. Also, I've heard that doing so could outpace the power steering system, which will lead to overheating and damage to the system.

I'm not thinking of doing this; I'm just curious if it's even possible.

The steering gear inside the rack would have to be changed. AFAIK, no one makes a different steering gear or rack for these. I'm sure its possible but you would likely have to have some custom parts machined. Even then, who knows.

I think it would be more feasible to shorten the distance between where the tie rod end connects and the steering knuckle pivot axis than to mess with the rack gearing. That would also explain the higher load on the steering components.
