Rickashay, your OME vs TRD Tundra/LC lift thread is awesome. As much as I already know about all the lifting options, reading this helped probably more than anything.


My lift will be nearly identical to your current lift, except I'm going to substitute OME 890's in the rear, paired with the 5100's. Tundra/Bilstein front, OME/Bilstein rear. Should be a great lift for around $700. From my experience with the 890's, I won't need a trac bar, brake line or bump stops. Especially since I won't flex it out.

$700 for the lift, and about $1800 for the wheels/tires mounted and ready to roll. $2500. Eek. Too bad my wife would kill me if I used any of our tax refund on this stuff.....I better start saving. I got lucky with my last setup...it was super mega cheap all said and done.
 
I've been doing a little research into the engine/power side of things, since I have a supercharger and would like to not only get more power out of it, but make the engine be as bulletproof as possible for the long haul.

Which has lead me to water/meth injection. I'm really surprised no one on here uses it. I'm going to buy the nice Devils Own kit, with the controller and everything. That should not only make the engine run cooler and cleaner....but it'll allow me to run the URD 2.1 pulley and still not have any pinging or lean issues. And it's less than HALF as much as the URD 7th kit. Sure I have to buy methanol.....but here in the midwest that is easy and pretty cheap.

Another person on here has the Devils Own. I almost bought it, I still want to, but I have already commited to buying the CBI with swingout next!

Do you have a Scangauge to show the IAT before and after?
 
Yeah, I use a SGII. I'm not sure that the IAT will show much difference from spraying though....isn't the temp sensor by the maf? The injection will be downstream of that....

First, methanol is not easy to come by where I drive/will be driving my 4Runner.

Second, if you have a tune on the truck that is highly dependent on the meth to run properly and you run out in an area where it is not readily available.... :crybaby: Good luck. I road trip alot so this was a major problem for me. Not to mention I'm often off pavement for 100+ miles at a time.

Third, it's another tank to fill... all... the... time. Little meth tank = lots of fills... and lots of opportunies to run out at an inopportune time.

The 7th setup is so easy to live with. It's like that Rotisserie Oven on the infomercial... "Set it, and forget it!".

IMO, methanol kits are ideally suited for around-town, "street only" setups.

Yeah, I thought about all that. Makes perfect sense for you to not rely on it with how you use your rig.

While I will use the 4runner for road trips, it's probably only going to be once a year. I think the methanol setup will work out fine for me at this point since I can fit a pretty big tank under the hood, and can also use the washer fluid reservior if I know I'm going to be out on the road for a while. The biggest thing I need to discover is just how much I will use in real life, during a normal road trip style drive. Right now it's hard to guess. At worst, if I run out 1000 miles from home, I can swap the pulley on the blower back to stock and just drive it easy.



I did go by my local race shop yesterday just to price it out. For a 55 gallon drum, it's $205. Exactly as expensive as gasoline right now. But I'll be diluting it with distilled water....so depending on how much I actually spray, it might be pretty economical.

BTW, have you ever tried swapping a pulley on the S/C? You'll see...

Also, where are you going to keep a 50 gallon drum of toxic, flammable liquid? I know you have kids, and I've got to remind you that if they are boys, they will find it and they will be curious (assuming they are not real young).

To be honest, nope, I've never swapped the pulley. I figured if it was a b*tch I could engineer a special tool to help the job. Maybe.

My kids are still young (2 and 1) but obviously they don't stay young. lol. That said, I'll just have a locked pump on the top of the drum and it'll be in the garage. Lots of other stuff that shouldn't be gotten into in the garage, it'll just be one more thing that's off limits.

Appreciate the input. I'm already pretty familiar with alky injection, from when I had my GTI, and from the SRT-4 crowd that I used to hang out with. I'd just never even thought about it for a 4runner...since I never thought I'd have a boosted 4Runner. I had a Snow Performance kit on my MKV....but it was a totally different beast than the 4RUnner. 2.0T, direct injection, running 21lbs of boost. So it's kind of like starting over, I just have no clue how much I'll use and how the truck will respond to it.
 
Finally doing work on the truck...finally. I never got a chance to go through it mechanically and do all the maintenance that I wanted to when I bought it, but the time has finally come.

-Oil/filter
-Trasmission filter
-Transmission cooler/inline filter
-Lube driveshafts
-Change FDiff, RDiff and T-case fluid
-Spark plugs/wires
-Air filter
-Clean MAF
-PCV
-Diff breather
-Coolant flush


I will feel much better driving it to Colorado in a couple weeks, knowing all that stuff is fresh. And I do feel pretty darn good about the rig now too, after finally getting into it. The old plugs were worn, but look perfect, and they were NGK BKR5EIX-11's. Which is a nice iridium plug...but normal heat range I believe. The MAF was pretty clean as well....meaning the PO didn't over-oil the K&N filter. Good job, whoever you were. The PCV wasn't plugged, the diff breathers were all still breathing, the coolant was red and clean, the drive-shafts had obvious signs of flinging grease in the past, so even thought they are due....at least they weren't dry. Basically, I found only good signs of good previous owner.

I also took my first sample of oil to send to Blackstone. Very interested to get it back. It was a 4500 mile run on Pennzoil Platinum with an oversize K&N filter.
 
I haven't quite gotten to the most interesting part....what I find when I drop the trans pan. I didn't get it unbolted yesterday, hopefully I can do it tonight after the Mother's Day bbq festivities are over with. :) I hope i find slimy magnets...and that's it.

I've seen a couple slivers of metal in other 4Runner trans pans...but never this many. The size is small enough that I'm not freaking out...but there was just more of it than I wanted to see. What says everyone else?
 
Yes, I would tend to agree with you kball. The filter was fairly clean, there was visible debris sat the inlet section, but none to be seen anywhere near the outlet. I also did just have the transmission flushed with the BG machine a couple months ago...who knows how much that cleans the filter, but I guess to give props to BG, the filter certainly looked better than I would have expected a 190k mile filter to look.
 
Good work! I never dropped the pan, now I kinda want to..

Totally worth doing. Really every transmission should get a new filter at some point in time. And have it's magnets cleaned off too. Plus, it's easy to do on our rigs. Just take the sway bar end links loose so you can rotate the sway bar, and the pan comes right off. The hardest part of the whole thing is cleaning the damn FIPG off the pan. It comes off the trans pretty easy.

Dried on gasket makers are a pain to remove, not to mention stuck on paper type ones, and using a sharp scraper doesn't always work either and can potentially scratch the gasket surface.

I just borrow my friends air angle die grinder with screw on abrasive discs just for this very purpose. Life's easy!

Great job on cleaning the tranny pan, I may also be doing this sometime soon.
