Radiator question: Koyo same as what came in it?

i believe that toyota had koyo make some years of the factory rad, most of these parts are farmed out to oem part suppliers under contracts. I would run that koyo anyday!
 
I'm pretty sure Koyo is not the OEM since I haven't seen any proof of it other than people saying that other imports come with them.

I do know that Toyota has their own supplier (ToyoRad, I do believe) that supplies radiators for Land Cruiser's and Hilux's. Denso also seems like a likely supplier.

I'm pretty sure you could get a new OEM for around $250 or less.

The reproduction one Toyota offers is $217, the original, with my discount, is $400. I'm not sure who makes the reproduction one. Lowe Toyota in GA didn't know who make the cheaper option, but said Toyota issued this as a alternative to the higher priced original.

Didn't know that. I don't think Toyota would be putting out junk even if it is reproduction. I would check out the Denso if you don't want a reproduction.

DENSO it is! I replaced my AC condenser not too long ago and went the DENSO route. (I think DENSO made the original??)

The timing belt was replaced at 45k miles, but I don't know if the water pump and thermostat were done. Should I bother with either while installing the new radiator and hoses?

How many miles are on it now? If you're going to go into it then you might as well be set for another 100k.

The timing belt was done by the previous owner at 45k miles, I'm just not sure if they also did the water pump and thermostat at the same time.

Changing out the radiator is just a preventative measure before the warm summer. I drove it 700+ miles in last summers heat from NC to TN right after I bought it. No issues then, so I hope I'm only better off now.
 
Try this: DENSO P/N- LA990009-2411.2 This was the part number from my paperwork that came with my replacement radiator changed 9/2012. My 4Runner is a 2001 SR5 V6 FWD. HTH, Good Luck.
 
Posted this in another thread but thought it might be helpful/relevant here for future reference:


Replaced my radiator, installed a trans cooler and gave her a good flush. Have to say though, im pretty unhappy about the TYC radiator i got from amazon. It did not come boxed or labeled as a koyo like others have received.

From my research i half expected "fitment issues," but it straight up did not fit. Luckily i was at a friends shop because we needed to cut grind and weld on the support brackets to make them clear between the frame. Granted my problem was exacerbated by my arb brackets, but even without those present, the supports would have been pinched between the frame rails and at the first sign of frame flex who knows what would have happened.

Also it was missing a bolt, one of the plastic mounting tabs was already cracked, support bracket mounting tabs were bent, etc. definitely not near the quality of the oem i was replacing.

Was half tempted to return it but i really wanted to rest easy not worrying about a milkshake at 180k miles so we made do.

I know people have repeatedly said koyo/tyc are same product but I dont doubt i received a lesser radiator then the koyos people have been getting. personally i would not buy another TYC. Fwiw nowhere on the radiator or packaging was there any indication of anything branded koyo.

Gripe complete, moving on.
 
I plan on going with a Koyo when I replace my radiator. I dont know if Koyo is the OEM for Toyota, and their likely not the OEM manufacturers, but they have recieved plenty of good reviews and are known for their durability.

Here is a Koyo radiator from the place I was looking to purchase it. Seems like a practical buy. Certainly better than $400+.

In my opinion, TYC in nowhere near quality of KOYO. KOYO gets good reviews, while I rarely hear ANYTHING positive about TYC products, like their headlights and interior accessories.

Koyo is my personal Fav. I had one in my boosted 240sx and it was always ICE cold!!!! Never had a single issue. Very high quality and light. I agree TYC makes pretty garbage products. Pretty low quality all around.
 
Koyos are good radiators, ran one stock oem replacement for years in my 400whp talon, then swapped to one of there alluminum cores which also worked great, with my 175* thermostat and that large core my heater would never get warm in the winter. LOL.
 
Hey Brian, I had read on another forum that vendor has received horrible reviews and an F from the BBB, you might wanna check that out before pulling the trigger.

Where i think i went wrong is i bought a TYC from amazon thinking i was gonna receive a rebranded koyo like everyone else, but not my luck.

right wrong or indifferent, what i have come to believe is that tyc is a customer of koyo, and they source, rebrand, and flip the koyo rad's. Thats not to say that they cant source alternate, cheaper suppliers and do the same thing with a lesser quality radiator, which is what i think happened with me.

I wish i would have spent the $40 difference and bought a specifically advertised koyo in the first place, now i have to worry about night terrors from a shady radiator lol.

hopefully this saves someone else from the same trouble, if you buy a TYC from amazon, you are NOT guaranteed to receive a koyo, word to the wise...
