Radio / Nav Rebooting

Hi Everyone

I have a new 2016 TRD Pro 4Runner (less than 400 Miles). Yesterday while driving and listening to music via Bluetooth, the radio / nav unit rebooted about 4 times. Having had navigation / infotainment issues on my previous Jeep (One of the main reasons I sold the car), its very frustrating to say the least. My Iphone 6 is running the latest software and my etune software is up to date as well as it prompted me to update it last week.

Anyone have this issue happen to them or suggestions? I searched around and saw some very old threads but not totally similar. I really do not want to bring it to the dealer as I had an awful experience with my previous car when the dealer replaced the head unit in my Jeep and ended up causing more damage.

Any ideas / help is very appreciated.

Long answer short: common problem, no real resolution. Some people claim success with warranty replacement or TSB service but most do not.

I just deal with it.

Same thing has been happening to me since I did a recent update. Annoying.
I'm going to see if the next update fixes the issue.

I had my radio freeze one time. Music still was playing but touch screen wouldn't accept any input from screen. Turned it off and then back on and no problem since. When I play Bluetooth the screen is constantly rebooting the album art but the sound never turns off, so I just live with it. Don't know if that's normal or not.

Mine got to the point it would reboot up to 8 times in a row. I had to take video of it rebooting an take it to the dealer. Bad thing is, mine started doing it in Colorado when i was actually needing the nav.

Dealer replaced the head unit 2 weeks ago and so far no reboot....BUT i have driven it less than 15 miles in two weeks.

I found it only happens with bluetooth. You can reboot by holding the volume button down for 3-5 seconds and it forces a reboot.

I've ONLY had it happen on drives longer than 6-8 hours.

My Jeep (a total pos), at least didn't reboot or freeze. It had numerous issues such as incorrect time and incorrect location, but basic functions like the radio worked.

Is there any way to at least get the rebooting to stop? Disconnect Bluetooth possibly?

Mines been rebooting at least twice within a 2 hours drive for me. Thinking about bringing it in before my 36k warranty. But seems like some has mentioned there's no definite fix.

Mine has been doing it since getting the vehicle in 2014 pretty much. It seems to happen most often when on road trips with bluetooth going and an address in the nav system. On our trip to Dallas this past weekend it did it 6+ times.

I just recently found out about the TSB and stopped by the dealer last Friday to discuss it. Of course they said since I'm at 40K and over the warranty I'll have to pay. I said it's pretty ridiculous since it's been happening so long but was never made aware of a fix. On top of that it's software related an not a normal wear and tear item so the warranty bit shouldn't make a damn difference. None the less he said it's only like $30-35 to get the update done out of pocket.

It's also ironic that later that day we left for Dallas and I had the worst round of reboots ever. I plan on taking it in for the TSB update tomorrow morning and will let everyone know how it goes.

Wait, is the entire radio resetting, all information is lost everytime it reboots or just radio settings and navigation? That might be a bit more than an Entune software issue.

In any case, take it to a dealer you trust and have them look it over (if you can get video of the headunit when it's messing up that helps as well, but I understand that can be difficult).

You're not going to be able to do anything on your end either way, Headunit software is distributed by Toyota and the updates lag quite a bit behind new phones/issues; so there may not even be an update to address that issue at this point in time. IF the software update doesn't fix the problem it'll probably be replaced with a new head unit anyways (should cause issues if it's installed correctly when they replace it, so I will just chalk your experience with Jeep up to it being a Chrysler product.)

IF they cannot reproduce the issue the first time, they should open a TAS Case the second time you come in for the same issue so that the customer is not stuck feeling like nothing is being done.

Bottom line, if it's under warranty have the dealer look it over and noted (make sure it's noted on the RO) so that it gets taken care of or at least you have information to push Toyota to lean on the dealer if they're being unprofessional/lazy/incompetent.

I have never had a reboot when bluetooth is not connected, IIRC.

My suggestion if you "need" nav, like if you are in the middle of nowhere, nearly out of gas, have a raid grizzly chasing you, and your wife in the passenger seat is about to drop triplets and a bloody placenta onto your seat fabric... is get a Garmin. That's probably useful regardless, considering that the nav sucks ass even when it is working.

That's why I am asking, if it's completely clearing it's saved memory that might be a different issue that a software update can't fix. I've seen some weird stuff with these units over the years. At my old dealership we had one that couldn't create a MAC Address for itself so Bluetooth wouldn't work at all; we ended up sending that one back because we had no way to fix that issue.

This is good to know. My 2011 F150 used 'Microsoft Sync' as the counterpart of Entune. The Sync software would very often go 'blue screen of death' and become totally unresponsive. It took a while to figure out that CTRL+ALT+DEL could only be done by pulling a fuse. How convenient...

Basically whats happening is im listening to music and all of a sudden the music turns off, the screen goes black, and then I see the Toyota logo as its rebooting. Once it comes back up, my pre-sets are still saved etc - its just that it reboots and turns off and on.

This was happening to me last year and would start resetting over and over for entire drives to and from work for a couple of days before I brought it in. I was hoping it was just in need of an update but they ended up having to replace the head unit cpu and it hasn't had the problem again since.

As of this post, my truck has 58,000 miles in the past 18 months. We just got back from a road trip to New Orleans on Monday - 9 hours of driving and no problems with EnTune...

...until yesterday. I left my office to head home. I called my wife on the bluetooth (like I do very regularly). I talked to her for about 10 minutes and my head unit rebooted just like you described except it did this 3 times. I didn't lose any presets or anything, but it was completely unusable for a few minutes.

The only thing I can think of is the latest EnTune update (which it did last week through my phone) is the culprit. Never thought I would actually have wanted an extended warranty on a 4Runner, but now I am thinking about getting one.

Try updating the firmware if it isnt already current.

My 4runner's radio did this a few times but that was because my battery terminal harness/10mm wasnt tightened and the alternator was the only thing keeping my radio running (which did fine until I bumped the music up).
Do any electrical mods/lights recently?

Strange that the same thing happened to me this past weekend ('16 SR5P, no mods). On Saturday I drove it for about 9 hours throughout the day with no problem, listened to XM, AM, USB. The next day out of the blue it just rebooted about 5 times during a 25 minute trip. Then a couple more times during the return trip. Interesting thing, during a trip later in the day, it would not connect to my phone via Bluetooth. Since then, it has been working fine these past few days. All presets and settings were intact, bluetooth functionality is back, etc., but oddly enough, I did have to retrain the voice commands yesterday.
