Radio / Nav Rebooting

Is this a relatively new phenomenon from a recent software update to EnTune or has this been going on for a few years?

hard to say...i've always had issues with this, although it is much more frequent now since the latest update was pushed out

the system is quite unreliable

I have a new new 2016 Limited 5 days old and 200 miles on it, today the radio screen is just a blank screen! wont turn on wont do anything! unbelievable i purchased this 4runner because of the reliability i heard of about Toyota products!. 5 days in and it's not making a first time 4runner owner feel welcome.

I was able to get the TSB update performed by the dealer yesterday. To much of my surprise they did it under warranty and didn't charge me a dime even though I'm at 40K. I was very vocal about it several times how a software update should be completely irrelevant to the number of miles on the vehicle.

Now a matter of waiting to see if it makes a difference. I do think it seems a little more responsive to touch input, but that could be a placebo affect. Also, there are some minor feature tweaks here and there. The nav will now display the street and speed limit by default without a destination being put in.

Mine just started doing this yesterday after having no issues for 25k miles. I would guess its due to a recent update that I had done a few weeks ago.

My 2015 Trail has been doing this for a while, maybe a year? Maybe less.
It freezes and then eventually restarts or I force a restart.
If I turn Bluetooth off it doesnt happen.
I find that when Im playing music via bluetooth from my phone, it happens the most, especially if Im using the Nav.

This issue and the inability of the Entire system to send texts via iPhones is pretty annoying.
For a company that sells so many vehicles and has so many resources, they can't get a couple engineers to fix these things?

Someone once told me that Toyota is more of a marketing company and Honda is more of an engineering company. I called BS, I love Toyota's.
But the inability of one of the world's biggest car sellers can't fix these 2 things which are relatively old technology? I can't think of a single reason why they can't fix this, other than lack of caring.

I have a 2016 TRDP that this started happening with as well but it might be worth mentioning that it only started happening when I got a new phone (Galaxy S7 Edge). It previously had no problems despite many 7~8 hour days in the car (iPhone 6+).

I think the problem right now is the Entune app. I've removed it from my phone for now and I've yet to have a problem with it.

My 2015 is at the dealer right now for this issue. I didn't experience this issue until about two months ago when it started. From that point forward, it has annoyed me enough that I came to this forum, found out that I might need an update, and took it the dealer even though I'm out of warranty. I didn't update or change anything on the truck in advance of the onset of the problem. If I had to guess, I'd say it's something to do with a change of software on the phone side of the equation (although this problem appears to affect iphone users and others, so perhaps it's related to the bluetooth software).

The dealer tried to update the radio and said it wouldn't update. In talking over the issue more, the CSR basically said it's a problem with the phone (shock!) and that the only way the phone and the truck will play nice together using bluetooth is if the phone is actually plugged in through an auxiliary cord.

It doesn't make much sense to me but I like the truck enough to put up with the fact that the bluetooth capability on the radio is unreliable.

Is there any way to at least get the rebooting to stop? Disconnect Bluetooth possibly?

Hi PMHSLight,

...I hate sounding like a broken record... but the headunit's Processor works much like a windows laptop in that it's subject to damaged, corrupted or missing files; it's also vulnerable to reaching it's overload of stored temporary files & history logs which are there to be used for trouble-shooting problems with the audio/navi-system at the local repair shop or dealership. The first thing to do (before a panic sets in) is to do a MASTER RESET on that system. If you look under the hood in the main relay/fusebox, and locate the fuse that's labeled 30A AMP Fuse (for 2013 and earlier 4runners), or 20A RAD Fuse (for 2014 and later vehicles).

Pull that fuse out and leave it out for a minimum of four hours; I've pulled that fuse out after I'm home for the night when needed! The point of this procedure is to rid the hard-drive/processor of it's stored/corrupted data files in the system's "registry"... this will force the processor to it's default settings like when the vehicle was brand new. I'm guessing that 70% of those who are experiencing this problem will have success with this reset, and 30% will either need their operating systems uninstalled and then reinstalled, or will need a newer vers. of the O.S. (i.e. software update); depending on how old the OS version is, and if it was a trouble-free version when it was first released! 'Best to you all'

I've deleted the entune app from my phone. No more freezing. I have an iPhone 7.
I also get texts now and everything seems to be working pretty well.

Hi adrawk,

WOW... that's a new one on me! I don't know that had such a desirable effect but I'm glad that it worked for you!

Mine rebooted 3 times on my way home last night. First time. Only 3700 miles on the clock.

I was not impressed. I did not lose any settings except for the track up (vs north up) on the GPS. I had my phone plugged in to charge, the charging went off during the reboot.

I' hope this does not become a common thing.

I did have bluetooth on.

Not sure if this is a "solution" but I was having this issue and I did months of trouble shooting to no reward. I had left my wifi on while at my house and was sitting in the driveway on a call for about 15 minutes when an update got pushed through for the Entune system. Once I updated it, the rebooting stopped. Again, it could be a total coincidence but this was my experience.

I'm going to the dealer today to get my head unit updated. Mine crashes maybe once every 5-8 hour. So not that bad but still annoying.

Master reset

Sorry if this is an obvious/dumb question (I searched the other threads mentioning a master reset and couldn't find a hard answer):

Does doing this procedure wipe out the radio presets, navigation address book entries, etc.? Or just reset the settings/preferences to the defaults?

Hi drewsder,

If you do it right, you will lose your radio presets and the center console 'Compass circle calibration'. No need to worry about the phone Contacts or address book cuz the source of those is your hand held device! PS: ...and that isn't a dumb question! Thanks for your post!

We had a couple of crashes on our new to us 2014 Limited with the JBL system. Because we're under the 30 day warranty of buying the vehicle they oped to install a new head unit, will have it installed in a few weeks. Hopefully the newest HU's available will come with the latest software programmed in and will last us the duration of the vehicle.

Very strange that the only real issue with these cars is the raido and nav...

Funny... mine has been fine for quite awhile (since last update), and suddenly out of the blue yesterday (or maybe it was the day before), it's been crashing or freezing up like 3 times a day. Guess I'll make an appt here soon....
