I'm running the Pioneer AVH-2300NEX in my 2008 (and using an aftermarket backup camera) and I'm super happy with it. Seemed to be the most affordable Android Auto option and it's well reviewed. I listen to AM radio too and I'd say it does fine with AM, no complaints.

I'm running the same exact setup and love it, except for the AM radio reception. I have none. FM is fine. What did you do with your antenna?

Your going to get a plethora of answers as everyone has their personal favorites.
Think about what you need or want.
CD? App radio, Are you just replacing the head unit or building a big system?
AM is the only thing oyu mentioned so a raido with HD may be the way to go as HD AM is crystal clear although signal may cut out now and then.

That looks like a great system, but Crutchfield seems to have discontinued it for some reason, even though Amazon still sells it. I was looking it up on Crutchfield mainly to compare price, AND get the correct harnesses and adapters for a trouble free install. I was also considering picking one up for my daughter’s 2003 Camry because of the Carplay feature. She has a JBL system though, so I think the install might be trickier, but I’m not sure. For those who have installed in situations replacing a JBL, is it just a matter of using an extra harness, or is there more to it? Fortunately I think my SR5 will probably be more straight forward, although it came with a single din Pioneer, so I have no idea if the factory brackets are still intact, or even the connectors for that matter. The system it has now has Bluetooth and plays very well, but I’d like a unit with a screen so I can do a backup camera. Since I have an iPhone, CarPlay is just an added perk.

I ended up just using 1 of the 2 antennas - the one that plugs into the standard size port on the radio IIRC. AM works fine, don't think I did anything special to get it to come through.
Weird, because I did the same thing and it worked for a bit, but I had to pull the stereo out so I could do some stuff, and it hasn't worked since. I've used that larger Motorola style plug, checked its fitment, and everything. FM is okay, nothing on the AM band.

make sure the unused antenna is covered up and not touching bare metal.
this is why some like to use the motorola Y and the gm antenna adapter for the smaller plug, to combine the antenna plugs. also for power, just tap the blue on the aftermarket harness to the red acc wire. this leave the radio harness blue remote turn on unused, use that for aftermarket amps.

Can you run google maps to this receiver from an Android phone?

Yep! Does full Android Auto or Apple Car Play. Google Maps integration is probably my favorite aspect of it.
Google or Waze. I like both. Google if I need to go somewhere specific and I need navigation. Waze if I'm just driving and want warnings of upcoming hazards. It is quite awesome.
FYI, since OP is concerned with AM reception, there is a tradeoff if you use a Y-plug to passively combine both the antennas. The radio will have a shorter range of reception, so you might completely lose weak or distant channels, but, the channels you do get will be clearer with less chance of random dropout/fading.
