Raleigh Fayetteville NC want to help me put in timing belt?

I have the kit in the mail, was going to take it to the dealer and have them install it for about 400, but would love to do it myself with someone on here that has done it before and has the appropriate tools, etc etc.

Shoot the poop with some brews with ya for awhile!

If not, that's cool, I'll take it to the dealer. Be advised, I do shift work on a rotating schedule, and my weekends are crazy sometimes.

I can head up your way. Have you done this before? Do you have the proper tools? I ask this because if it's done incorrectlly, we're in some trouble. My zip 28304.

That's cool. I do have the correct tools or can make them if needed. I have not done a timing belt on a 4runner. I am sure it is not rocket science. I have not heard of any horror stories about a messed up timing install.

If it is any consolation, I have installed timing belts in Porsches, VW's, Audi's, Toyota's, Honda's, Acrua's, Nissan's, and timing chains on Mercedes, Chevy's and Nissan's

Which reminds me of a funny story. I had to replaced a water pump on a neighbors Porsche 944. The H2O pump works on the timing belt. This engine also has a timing belt for some balance shafts that smooth out any vibrations the motor might have.

Anyway, I had to remove both timing belts to get to the water pump, replace it and put it all back together.

Called my neighbor, he came over and took it for a test ride. He was astonished on how smooth the engine was. Apparently , the last person to work on this car put the balance shaft belt on wrong creating excessive vibrations. When he bought the car, he thought that the vibration was raw Porsche power and that was suppose to feel that way.

I could help if I am in Raleigh when you go to do it. The main thing is to have a tool made to hold the crankshaft pulley so you can remove the bolt. What kit did you buy? Make sure to replace the idlers and water pump.

I think your resume is thicker than mine in the automotive dept! How is your schedule? Consistant, weekends off, 9-5 type? About how long does it take to do tb, 4-6 hours?

Based on his posts, I'm confident Singtoe is more than qualified to do a TB. The only TB change disasters (and there have been a few) are from a failure to properly tighten the crank bolt back to 217 ft-lbs. A 250 ft-lb torque wrench is a must as well as a good holding tool.

If that crank bolt comes loose, you will loose your harmonic dampener for sure and possibly the crank. If the crank snout gets worn down by a loose dampener, a new motor is probably easier than putting a new crank in the old one.

You know what, I was not sure if the timing belt was done or not on my vehicle, so with 126K on it, I figured I better do it, and assume it had not been done. Well I pulled out the manual from the leather fold and found a booklet in there. I never looked at it before, so i started to thumb through it. Come to find out it was a record of scheduled service for the 4runner.

Every scheduled maintenance was conducted thoughout the vehicle life up to 90K including the Timing Belt done at 90,128 miles. Every maintenance log has a stamp on the page with initials. I am so happy, this vehicle was meticulously maintained. But now I have the TB kit for sale in the classifieds in this forum.

But if anyone in this area wants to do some work on the 4runner, theirs or mine, I'd love to come and learn a few things about automotive repair, my experience is limited, and I would love to broaden my horizons in the field.

I did the TB on my son's Hyundai Accent on July 4 weekend. Last night I dreamed that I checked the oil and found a weird angle where I could see the TB and I could see broken fibers sticking out in clumps as if it had been severely over-tensioned. Is my sub-conscious telling me to recheck the belt tension because it knows something, or is it just effing with me?

Maybe I should stay off this forum just before going to bed...

Any who, The wrench is awesome. I can change the display from foot pounds to nm/kg to inch pounds. I used to use it a lot on my MX stuff.
