It actually made it to 84K miles??? Wow
My father once had a 380SE. He didn't change the oil for about 23-25,000 miles. Motor started ticking and was physically noticeable on the gas pedal. This was around 1991?? Anyway, this was our first and LAST german car.
But I do miss it.

I'd like to know why it was the last? Most Mercs of that vintage are bulletproof.

Duh, of course it wasn't. BUT, it did start to nickel and dime him. A lot. He bought an LS400 in 1991. That car didn't nickel and dime him. Not in the 18 years he had it.
Oh it was. It was like driving a tank. We loved it. BUT, maintenance cost, things starting to break down (A/C, power windows come to mind) and that it was terrible in the snow meant it was doomed from staying in the family fleet. We all know there is a price to pay for driving a pointed star, but it was starting to wear thin. It was a joy to drive in the summer, but in the winter, where the rear wheel drive and front weight biased meant it was horrible in the snow. We put studded snow tires and it really didn't help much. We had an inclined driveway. Anyway, when we got our LS, it wasn't as dramatic as the Merc when the roads got bad.
But yes, it was a great car other than all those things.

Because a fair amount of people who buy these Audis(And many other new European cars) do not know jack on how a vehicle works and just want the brand. I vividly remember sitting in the office of our Audi salesman when we were were pulling the trigger on a B7 A4. The 2.0T's of that era had oil consumption issues and he gets a call from a buyer. The guy is saying that he heard of the issue and sees no oil on the dipstick. He was seriously asking what to do when the dipstick shows no oil. Our salesman shakes his head and goes "Umm... add oil?"
The car probably needed to get the engine replaced, but it's amazing how little some people know outside of a brand name.
