Range 0 mi

I know the on board computer isn't laser accurate when it comes to the Range Mile, so this morning after dropping off the kids at school, I had 3 miles on the Range meter and on my way to the gas station it dropped to "0". From previous experience on my Lexus I knew I still had gas but was curious just how much.

After filling up, and topping off 4 more clicks just to make sure, I put in 20.961 gallons. The tank holds 23. Before I get flamed, I know you shouldn't let the gas get that low cause all the settlements can get into your engine and all (there shouldn't be too much settlements since the 4R only has 500 mi on it) but I was too lazy to get gas earlier.

Just thought I would share this bit of 'range mi' info.

I thought it was suppose to be bad if you "top-off" your tank because of EVAP issues.

Alright, next thing you're going to look for is liquid fuel in the EVAP hoses, like in this particular one, in the plastic elbow, it has liquid gas in there. That can set the code and it can also damage other parts in the system. What causes it? You cause it! You top off the tank, and when you top off the tank too much, liquid gas overflows into the EVAP system, and you've got a check-engine light and possibly some expensive repairs..."

My bad, I didn't know that. I usually only click it once but wanted to make sure I filled the tank. This is good to know, no more topping off for me!

i don't trust the range, but it's a nice little tool. i pay more attention to how many miles i driver on the trip and where the gas gauge is at. i noticed the range will vary depending on if i come back from a road trip or doing more city driving. i've had the gas light come on with 43 miles left on the range and also had the light come on with 20ish miles on the range. the range miles have never matched my trip miles.

The first time the pump shuts off means it's done. There is no need to click it any more times.

More than likely you are just wasting money doing that since the rate at which the flow meter counts how much you owe and the speed at which the nozzle clicks on and off are probably pretty different.

I think that the "sediment" thing is an old wife's tale. First, the fuel pump is going to pull from the bottom or near the bottom of the tank. You'd have several gallons of gas you could never reach if it didn't. Second, you have a fuel filter that is designed to catch any particulates anyway. Third, the fuel will naturally slosh around by driving the car, thus getting the sediment moving and floating inside the fuel.

You also have filters in your injectors.

Thats what I always tell people when I hear them say that about sediment settling in the bottom of the fuel tank...

Actually the new 4Runner holds 24 Gallons of gas. I also noticed on your tirp meter you were only up to about 350 with a full tank of fuel, mine showed 399 the other day after fill up with 16.5 mpg on my dash (16.5 x 24 = 396) . I question if something is not acurate with your system? What does your mpg meter say?

My mpg meter has been in the low 15's, last read was 15.3 (not much hwy driving), so with a 23 gallon tank it works out right (15.3 x 23 = 351.9). I wish I could go 399 miles

After fill up mine says 430-440 but I've at a 2wd. I do alot of hwy driving. I filled up/reset this morning before starting a 200 mile trip and when I arrived I was a 23.3 mpg.

WOW! Interesting! When the new 4R came out Toyota's web site said it had a 24G tank, but my manual said 23G as well. I called Toyota to discuss another matter and inquired about the fuel tank size as well, they 'looked into it' and confirmed their site was correct at 24G and the manual was a 'typo'. I periodically checked their site and it has always said 24G....until now! I looked and they have changed the number back to 23G, which is what the 4th gen were (from what we have been told). I will check to see what my brochure says later (at my office). Well at least they f-i-n-a-l-l-y picked a number!

Brochure says 24, I would say not. I have several fill-ups where it would only hold about 20.5 gallons, and range said 8 miles or less to go and fuel light on My calculated averages a little over 18, so I can't imagine I could have gone 50 more miles?

My personal record is 31 miles BEYOND the point where Range 0 miles initally displayed. I would try further but haven't been carrying an extra gas can in the truck.

My overall tank maximum range is 503 miles on a single tank. Even then the fillup only took 21.8 gallons for a whopping 23.1 mpg actual tank average! arty:

It appears the computer only thinks there is around 20.8 gallons when it does it's range calculation. After fillup, my range then showed 438 miles, the highest I have ever seen it. With normal driving, the range displayed after fillup varies between 400-420. When I first got the truck, it was always 390-404. I've been trying to make sense of it for almost six month now (6k miles).

I experienced a similar fate last night... I am averaging 18.8 MPG's and at fill up I get a range of about 375 Miles.

Im no chemist, but that math doesn't compute. (Would Mean I have a 19.94G Tank)

I think the range is just a REALLY rough estimate. I wonder how they calculate it?

At with a 23G tank and 18.8 MPG's I should be getting a range of about 430 miles.

Yeah, that indicator seems to be for a 20.8 gal tank for me. Especially on a road trip, I have driven like 30 miles after it read 0. And I still filled up only 21.6 gal. However, I was getting better mileage than usual due to almost exclusive driving on the highway with that tank.

I imagine it's a better safe than sorry sort of value. You probably wouldn't stop for gas any sooner if you knew that at 0 you were about to coast to a stop. I know I wouldn't.

Could it be that the tank holds 23, but the filler hose holds another gallon, hence the 24 number?
