This reminds me of the movie Days of Thunder where Harry is talking to the car frame telling it how it will have an extra big oil pan to cut the wind and a huge fuel line to hold extra fuel. LOL

you guys may want to check out the design of the fuel pump on your 5th gens. On the 2nd gen tacoma's the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in tank, once the gas goes below a quarter of a tank it will no longer be cooled and run hot. This happening every once and a while shouldnt hurt, but if its constant, you could cause your fuel pump to go bad prematurely.

My SR5 says 343-345 miles after a fill-up and I never top off. AVG has been showing 17.2 MPG.
During the winter time, I would show 333 miles after a fill-up.
By the way, if I am averaging 17.2 MPG and the tank holds 23 gallons, shouldn't my range show 395 miles after a fill up? It's either taking other things into consideration, or I'm not filling up the full 23 gallon tank.

I experienced a similar fate last night... I am averaging 18.8 MPG's and at fill up I get a range of about 375 Miles.
Im no chemist, but that math doesn't compute. (Would Mean I have a 19.94G Tank)
I think the range is just a REALLY rough estimate. I wonder how they calculate it?
At with a 23G tank and 18.8 MPG's I should be getting a range of about 430 miles.

That little dot next to your direction indicates your compass needs calibrated. I hadthis when I first bought my 4R and calibrated it in a parking lot.

Refer to Interior Features / Compass in the manual. There are instructions there (too much info to post here). You have to set your region first, then drive in a circle no faster than five miles per hour when you are in calibration mode. Took me a few tries, but I finally got it. Best to do it in an empty parking lot.

I look at the range meter to basically say when it hits 0, it is time to go get gas now. Most of the time I've always had 2-3 gallons to spare if I ever let it get that low. I'm sure it's a safety thing so you don't completely run the tank out.

Or someone can drive until they run out of gas. Get towed to a fuel station and fill up.......

I continually average right around 19-20 mpg and upon fill up it always says 395-405 miles. When it should be more like 450 miles. I just hit the mode button and switched to the mpg reading. seeing that fake range value is irritating.
How is it useless? It basically tells you how many miles to you should fill up. Do you intend to completely run out of gas every time you fill the tank? My GTI's fill light comes on w/ approximately 1.5 gallons left. If the light came on when I ran out of gas, it would be pretty damn useless.
Toyotas have always had a buffer built in. I remember on a ski trip w/ a gf many years ago we were at E in her Camry. I was freaking out because I was certain we were going to run out of gas. No worries, because she knew there was a 'reserve' built in. As an engineer, I almost expect everything to have a factor of safety built in.

It's a 4WD, and my range upon fill-up is always around 400. I've seen it go between 395 and 415. My MPG meter is stuck right at 19.7, and it has been for 2 months (in which I've put 6k miles on the poor thing.. 90 miles each day for commute)

Pull a trailer that has one of those metal ramps that sticks straight up in the air going 60ish mph and let us know if the reported avg MPG ever recovers :lookout:
Mine was reporting around 18.3 till' I pulled the trailer (5x10 or so, all metal with the kite, I mean ramp). After - was around 14 and now my mile to empty (MTE) shows 350 after fillup (was 378).
I am sure it will come back, just takes time I guess....(and yes, I reset the avg MPG and it stayed back at 18ish - MTE did not go back up, even after filling).
I have a 2008 4runner and I can get 20.2 MPG and range would read 435 when I filled up. But recently when I filled up the tank the RANGE is off by 100 miles and would read 335. I took the 4runner to the dealer and they said nothing is wrong (still under warranty). Hard to believe since I've own the suv for two year. I figure the dealer just don't want to fix the problem. Anyone have ever experience this?
You are on the wrong forum bud. This is 5th gen 4Runner (2010) What you are complaining about does not make sense. The range is an approximate mileage based on an average MPG, not nes=cessarily your actual MPG. When I fill mine up it usually shows a range of 390 miles. This is just an estimate

As stated, probably should re-post this in the 4th forum, see if any of those people have had this issue.
I have about 8,000 mi on my 2010 4Runner and typically go between 400-435 mi/tank and require 20-21 gallons/fill. The mileage from the computer says 20-21 mpg, which is fairly consistent with the fill volumes. I once drove almost an entire tank out at 65 mph and the computer suggested ~ 23 mpg.

Mine shows a range of 450+ on fill up. Consistant with my overall mileage of 22+mpg. Range reading is not affected by resetting the mileage comp.
It's not useless out here when you can go 100+ miles between gas stations and it is a good indicator of overall mileage. Divide highest reading by 21 for your overall MPG.

If you disconnect the neg terminal from your battery for 5-10 minutes it resets the computer back to factory. It should go back to 437miles on the range,at least mine always does and I've disconnected my battery several times and just did it to reset my CEL this morning.Unfortunately mine has always gone back to around 330 or so after a couple of tanks of gas are run thru it because of my big KM2 tires.
It takes a 10mm wrench,neg is on the right or outboard side of the battery if your looking at it from the front with the hood up. Loosen the nut on the thru bolt a couple of times and pull it up. Make SURE you don't let it touch the POS terminal or there will be fireworks!It's in the repair manual I'm sure.
Be warned though as it will set about everything back ,including clock,station presets,nav stuff,compass , windows, ect . You 'll have to go back to the manual and start over.
It won't change anything you had the dealer set if you had them change stuff.
Not sure if it resets the transmission learning but I don't think so and hav'nt noticed.
