Range Rover Sport owner looking to switch to the 4R

We have a 2015 Range Rover Sport and a 2010 Toyota Landcruiser.

The RRS's fit and finish puts a Toyota to shame. It's built like a vault. The interior of the RRS is much higher quality, much better ride, sounds system, and many more creature comforts.

The RRS's resale % value (at least the current generation) is one of the tops in the SUV world. Far better than the Land Cruiser. The 3 year old ones are still bringing pretty crazy money.

Tata revamped Range Rover and they are pretty much on their game, at least with the Range Rover Sport. I can't comment on any other LR models.

All of that said, for longevity I'm taking the LC. But make no mistake: The new generation RRS is a high quality machine, even if it is a bit more temperamental.

My 2016 RRS diesel was total crap. The only thing I liked was the engine. Air suspension failed in 100km, dealer wanted to keep my brand new vehicle for 2 weeks while they fixed it. The air suspension going clunk clunk clunk every time you stop and it lowers to access height was just embarrassing. Dealer said that was normal. The first time it got a little cold, the door wouldn't close.



So much for the quality....I've got another video to upload of the entire front door squeaking to no shit; dealer said that was normal. LR also advertised the vehicle of having a remote start feature from the app. I specifically paid extra for the InControl Apps feature because I parked outside at the time and wanted remote start. Get the vehicle, fire up the app, even shows the remote start option as part of the tour of the app, but once you actually log in, that feature is no where to be found. Hours and hours of run around from the dealer and LR head office. I even went as far as getting a US iTunes gift card/US iTunes account to see if there was a difference. 3 months later they finally tell me that the remote start feature was disabled for North America with no explanation as to why. No reimbursement for the feature I paid for either.

Eventually I got tired of hearing how everything is normal and gave up.

This is my first Toyota ever. Im a huge Audi guy, and have had numerous modded S4s, an RS4, R8, few 911s and now a Tesla P90D as my "work" vehicle.

In addition Ive had 4 LR vehicles. in 97 I paid 37k for a D90, shoulda kept her!
Had a 2007 RRS S/C(piece of shit), a 2010 VW Touareg Diesel..Cool vehicle, lot of crazy little hidden things, awesome engine but electronic crap. Very good offroad with locking rear Diff. went back to LR with a 2011 RRS HSE, then a 2014 RRS V8 S/C Dynamic. Was a very good vehicle. 75k miles and zero issues. Engine a beast with sub 5sec 0-60 and an awesome 8speed tranny. And about 20mpg highway while driving aggressive. Locking rear diff, killer ESP, traction control etc......super comfortable interior. 100mph on the highway was quiet as can be. SIde windows were double pane, heated front windshiels.....more than double the price ot the TRD Pro, but honestly the engine felt like it is worth more that the 4RUnner..


That said, for some reason I love the 4Runner. I've done all the mods myself. If I dent a panel, bumper, etc I could care less and could fix most of them myself and inexpensively. yes, its a really outdated crappy engine and especially transmission. But I'm keeping it. The mpg is a joke as well, and at 80mph, I'm not sure it will stop all too well.

ANyway, in my own opinion its not even in the same ball park as a RR with a V8 S/C engine...but I still love it and choose to drive it.... I do have a big boy RR Diesel on order, but I'm keeping the 4Runner as my camping, trail, beach ride....and I test drove the latest Land Cruiser and thought it was a heavy piece of crap with no performance and plastic interior feel compared to wifes Q or the RR

Haha all the reasons I got a 4Runner....the RRS was lovely on paper, but I wouldn't dare take it off pavement, didn't want to scratch it either. Enjoy the FFRR, noice. :bravo:

Friend of mine drove a Porsche Panamera and his wife drove a Range Rover. All he talked about was how his wife (short in stature) loved how the Range Rover would lower on its suspension which made it easier to get in. Can we say city slicker SUV?

Funny....that was one of my issues. Wouldn't start half the time after the vehicle was already warm. Really embarrassing when you're parked outside a Starbucks after getting a coffee and your 100k SUV misfires. :gun4:

Truth is, Range Rover is a niche market and in my opinion, Tata has brought them from the brink to something that's really good. It has been a remarkable turnaround. Range Rover is like a Viking refrigerator. It's more than you would ever need, and more than you should ever spend, but if you've got the discretionary dough and want the best of the best, you should treat yourself.

Folks don't buy Range Rovers for reliability. They don't buy them for longevity. Nor value or cheap payments. They buy them for high performance, the very latest in creature comforts & technology, and panache. When my son goes to the prom or to a banquet, the kids don't want to take the Cruiser. They want the Rover! Nothing wrong with that. Variety is the spice of life.

Well I did buy it and I bashed it when I owned it haha. They actually banned me on the RR forums for asking about my issues....they don't like to talk about them there either.

It's all fun and games until your bumper cover falls off on the freeway. That happened to one of my best friends in her RR when it was about 6 months old. Never damaged. Lol. By the end of two years most of the electronics for things like self parking and cruise control didn't work and dealer couldn't fix. She's much happier with a cayenne. So far it's been very reliable.

What I find a little confusing is why RR and 4runner/Land Cruiser are still compared to each other. RR doesn't make any off road oriented products anymore. They make luxury crossovers. Nothing wrong with that. Toyota doesn't sell a lot of LC200's in the USA anymore either. It's a vehicle built for Africa/Australia that we still get in small numbers. Comparing it to a unibody crossover is similar to comparing a current pathfinder with a 4runner. There was a time when they were competitors. But they're really not anymore.

I once got stuck with a Suzuki Kayashi (some name like that) with AWD for a rental car in Denver. Needed the AWD to go skiing on the weekends, during the week I was working on a failed bank in Broomfield. The keyless start F'd up at the bank and they had to come pick up the car on a flatbed and deliver me a new rental car. Unimpressed.

The only Range Rover designs I find attractive anymore are the full fat and the new velar. I have high hopes for the new defender but we will have to wait and see.

That said, I’m pretty deep into the toyota kool aid. I’ve never had an issue with any of my Toyota’s and they’ve all been a pleasure to own. They also don’t elicit negative reactions from others, which is a plus in my book.

I put my money where my mouth is and ordered a land cruiser that should be here any day now. It’s not a logical purchase as I’m coming out of pocket xxxxx plus tax to switch from my 18 trd Pro but it’s exactly what I want.
