Rant Thread - Motor

For all that is Holy....Why on earth does this damn motor act like its a freaking turbo- What do you mean you ask: Well, you have to constantly "spool-up" to get the damn thing to react. WORST PART, its NOT a turbo...so there is NOOO Payoff! Jeezes, this is the sloggiest motor/pedal connection I have ever experienced. I've OWNED over 40 vehicles and this one takes the cake. Oh, lets not stop there.....Once you do get the power on, it last exactly .005 seconds.

Real Life Scenarios all of you owners know:

Me: oh hey, traffic isn't moving in my lane, but the lane next to me is flying.
Truck: ta do ta do ta do...huh?
Me: Hey, I see an opening, but since we are only going 5 mph and the other lane is going around 20-25, we are going to have to use the skinny pedal.
Truck: ta do ta do ta do...huh?
Me: SMASHING THE GAS
Truck: ta do ta do ta do...huh?
Me: COME ON ALREADY, OUR HOLE IS CLOSING
Truck: mmmmmmMMMMMMM
Me: JEEZUS MAN! (I have now successfully changed lanes, but the hole has closed and a person is right on my ass
Truck: MMmmmmm....ta do ta do ta do
Me: SMASHING PEDAL AGAIN (just to try to catch back up with traffic in speedy lane)
Truck: ta do ta do ta do...huh?
Me: AAAARRGGGG!!!!! (literally screaming out loud like a 10yr old)

*This is a dramatization...but, its barley one!

PS....I refuse to pay money for a Pedal Commander, as my foot should be a good enough commander for free

I know exactly what you mean...my '18 is the first vehicle I've ever owned with the drive by wire and coming from cars with the older cable accelerators it's taken a lot of getting used to..Toyota really should have done a better job with this, but I bit the bullet and bought the PC..much better now.

before you try to pass, go ahead and downshift by pushing it over into the s mode which will bring your rpm's up and put you in a better place in the power band then it's plenty responsive and powerful enough to pass at speed. i'm used to always driving manual transmission, so it's second nature to select the gear you want before you start your pass, you just have to treat this a similar way.

I do, I'm in sequential shift mode constantly due to the slow response of our motor. I have 100+k miles on my rig, and I would have never made it this far without using it....but its not enough for me to hold my tongue at times.

get a sprint booster or a pedal commander. changed the way the car drove..

until i supercharged.

1. Drop into N and rev the engine to about 3K RPM and then drop it into D when ready to ZOOOOM!

2. Don’t buy an off road truck and expect it to drive like a sports car.

Spoiler: DON'T do number 1.

In other markets they come with a built in power mode that's both a pedal calibration change and a shift logic change. I've always been curious if the functionality was built into the ECU and could be accessed.

I have peripheral neuropathy and have reduced feeling in both my feet. Don't consider the spongy pedal feel and response (gas and brake) a good thing but it does mitigate and smoothens my "handicap" quite nicely now that I'm more used to the car. Good rant but the overly-mushy pedal feel/response is somewhat custom-made for me personally, I like it... Also love driving in Sport mode. Great way to help break-in a motor too.

could've had a v8! lmao. I searched for a good youtube clip on it, but couldn't find one. oh well.

I do not think i have an issue, or it is not enough for me to notice.

I may be a bit biased; my previous car was a Ford Edge, with the ecoboost engine, and that thing was downright dangerous in regards to trying to accelerate. I would push down and the gas and the engine would drop to idle often, and I would have to play/feather it to get it to go, not good design and actually dangerous in my opinion. When I hit the gas, I want it to go, not jsut stand there, let alone drop to idle.

It was so bad it was the first and hopefully last car I ever got rid of just due to this safety thing. I traded it in for my 4runner, was planning to get a 4runner anyway, but was waiting for better financial position, but said hell with it.

By the way, Ford (three separate dealers) said it was normal and part of the programming to help MPG.

The 4runner is a utopian dream compared to that Edge.

Honestly I bought a pedalcommander and it was well worth the cost. This car feels way to sluggish and the pedalcommander really fixes that problem. I usually am doing Sport or City mode. Don't need the Sport+ that often.

I'd say buy one and test it out for a bit. It really makes a difference. If you don't see it then just return.

My 4runner is sluggish too- in throttle response and initial low rpm acceleration.
I have learned that I can't confidently squirt across an opening or pass or merge into traffic like I could in my prior vehicles.

I also don't like that accelerating in the 1,200-2,200 range feels labored. I have to get it up in RPM's more than prior vehicles to get a decent seat of the pants feeling of moderate acceleration? Said another way, it won't effortlessly get up to speed easily at low RPMs, lacks lower RPM torque. I don't like having to nail the gas and get it up into the revs to get it going.
It does not promote easy laid back Granny-ish driving, which I like.
Damn I sound lame, I'm sorry.

Bugs me, but so far the tradeoff has been (knock on wood) NO maintenance or reliability problems. 105,000 miles. Contrast that with my cousin just put a new transmissio plus a string of other repairs n in his 2011 Tahoe, and it's still not right, OUCH! He said his next vehicle is going to be a Sequoia.

Oh- and bugs me that sometimes the 4runner rattles like a diesel at low rpm's during easy relaxed acceleration? Hopefully not knocking/ detonation? I run full synthetic oil, and 87 octane gas.
Been doing the diesel thing a long time, only during granny like low rpm light load acceleration.
But if this darn thing stays super reliable, I'll count it as a huge WIN!

That did concern me at first, but I read on here something about it, forget, but it normal.

I like it, reminds me of a diesel, love the sound and gets my imagination going. Use to cruise in a Nissan Patrol and did a road trip in one through Central Asia/Russia, so the sound brings the memories back.

A couple LOLs in this group:

1) "sport" mode group. Its not Sport Mode and does nothing besides lets you SHIFT within your choosing- S stands for Shift

2) Should have gotten this or that or whiny group: I stated specifically it was a rant thread. Ive had this longer than most of you as mine is a 14, plus I have 100k+ on it. Id say I'm qualified to make a rant. Someday's it just gets to ya (like today) I do a lot of miles off road as well, which its pros are greater than its cons. But like I said...somedays~

At what point do we confront the awkward elephant in the room, ie...

The health issue known as Super Wimpyass Right Foot Syndrome?

My foot has nothing to do with the 1.5 second delay in response. Like I said, you have to treat it like a turbo and "pre-Spool" that sumbitc up!

Have you even been out on the trail and wanted to mud your buddies? If you have youll realize that you have to bury the pedal before you hit the mud(or whatever) as if you waited until you got into it, its too late.
