Rarest 3rd gen of them all?

Mine had a bizarre cd-based Satnav unit in Japanese mounted under the passenger seat. It interfaced with the speakers directly. I found this when I took it out to put an amp in there instead.

Binned it. It had no CD or power to it. Headunit had been replaced in the UK by the PO with a Mister Two unit.

I still have the magnetic GPS unit on the roof. I don't know why, to be honest.

I still have the TOYOTA mini-disc player in there too. It's not wired in, if anyone wants it.

Got the rear heater.

Drop down rear mirror.

Got the Field Monitor. Not the air purifying one.

Factory tints on cargo glass and rear windows.

Cloaking Device. Shhh!

That looks like a good one. The steel wheels look like 16's so it could have 4.56 gear's too.

There are two 5 speeds on the local Craigslist with e-lockers right now, $5500 each. A 96 and a 97. White with cloth seats.

I've got a 2000 SR5, 3.4, manual, 4x4, leather, no sunroof, skinny black flares.

The hits to rarity are potentially the lack of e-locker and most likely the desert dune color.

I think it's just the cupholders and other 99 upgrades that people want. I don't think there is any major drive train difference.

I've read that the 96-97's have a different fuel delivery setup, injectors or something that are less efficient. Don't quote me on that though. Plus the steering wheel looks dated. 98-00 are the one's I'd look for, but really 99-00 are more desirable. The interior/exterior changes are worth it. Can swap into older truck so not a huge deal, but still...gotta have that fat lip bumper and digital odometer...

Isn't lavender steel damn near the same color? I wonder if marketing discovered lavender steel sounded too "wussy" and no one ordered any in that color so they changed it to cool steel. haha

'97 SR5 Lavender Steel Metallic here! I love this color. You're right—it started in '96-'97 as Lavender Steel Metallic, but then they changed the name (color stayed the same) to Cool Steel Metallic for '98. Then discontinued the color. There really isn't any purple/lavender visible except in certain warm sunlight. And even then, it's super subtle. The "Cool Steel Metallic" is a more apt name IMOP.

The paint code is exactly the same(926)... So all you'd think is they changed the name. But that's not really the case.

The lavender does in fact have a hue of lavender in light. Cool steel is a blue hue.

Another prime example of this is the paint code shared between different shades of 4v6 beige on the earlier fj cruiser... Aka 4v6 quicksand on the later fj cruiser and trd pro 5th gen runner... Same code yet you put those colors side by side and they aren't the same tn at all.

So when getting paint, a good shop will have mix books by year and tag color alongside the paint code.
