Rattle Canned my Hood - Looks Great

So I went into this with not much expectations, but I knew whatever came out would look alot better than when I started, so what the heck. All in I think I spent $150. Paint was color matched from AutomotiveTouchup.com.

They did a pretty good job color matching, it is a little more metallic than the existing color, but I am definitely happy with it!

Color was 1a1 Anthracite Grey

Before - the hood was a major eyesore

During - started sanding by hand, then said screw it, using my orbital sander and got it done in like 30 minutes - 180 grit then 300 grit. Then washed and ready for primer

During - Primer was really thick, often times came out with a bumpy texture - but sanded really easily.

Finished Product! Haven't Installed it yet. Need to do rubbing compound, then wax in 30 days.

Can't expect a smooth flow using just rattle cans. Heck, my cousin who's a auto painter comes out of the booth with orange peel finishes. It's all in the cut and buffing my cousin tell me.

Yeah dude, clear is an important part. It will be matte finish if you don't clear coat it. I honestly wish I bought more cans of clear. This is 4 cans each of primer, base, and clear.

Anthracite's all fade like this, which is probably why they discontinued them. Good luck! Save the Anthracites!

Definitely orange peel-I think the rubbing compound and buff will help lot. It said in the instructions that the best way to eliminate the orange peel is to wait longer between clear coat applications- must be completely hard between coats. It was humid out which lengthened drying times and may have led to this.

That hood looks great for a rattle can at home paint job :thumb:

I've been told the only thing you can do to eliminate orange peel is color sand it with varying grades of abrasives ending in 1500-2000 grit.

There are plenty of tutorials on youtube on how to do it, but it takes time and the right touch (experience)

At my work we mix color matched spray cans that can either be basecoat/clearcoat or a single stage paint with the basecoat and clear coat in the same can. Both are very popular and I’ve used both depending on how well I want it to turn out. That hood looks really good.

Nice work! I'm excited to see it all installed. Are you going to wetsand with high grit to get rid of orange peel after it cures a while? I honestly think it looks great, just wondering how far you're going to take it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. I have it installed now and it is night and day look for the overall appearance! Pumppped about it. I really want to wait to post a pic until it is polished up, but have to wait 30 days, AND its raining today...

I used the clear from the same company that provided everything - AutomotiveTouchup.com

It did tiger stripe a little, I learned more as i went along - more paint cans totals, the better it will look for sure, and overlapping sprays. I was down to about 50% overlap. When overlapping, hold the gun farther away (I used a gun attachment for the cans- from the same company) since each "stripe" will be hit twice, if that makes sense?

If you are thinking about it, I would say definitely give it a shot. Take your time. I think overall between primer, base, and clear i had almost 20 coats altogether, but it was worth the patience.
