Rattle From A/C Compressor when A/C is On

Hi Guys -
I'm new to the forum but have had my 2005 SR5 since 07 and for the most part have been very happy with it. I can't help but notice these days a noisy rattling sound that only happens w/the A/C or defrost is on. I seem to have isolated it to the A/C compressor. The noise comes and goes whenever the A/C cycles.

The A/C works well. Is it possible there's something wrong w/the clutch? Can I replace just the clutch or does the whole compressor have to be replaced?

i am also interested in the answer of this question... as mine has just started doing the same thing last week... found a new compressor for around $600...

Resurrecting this old question becasue I am having the same issue.

The A/C is blowing nice and cold but I have a rattling noise when the A/C compressor kicks on.

How hard is it to change out the A/C clutch assembly on the V8? Not much room to get at it, but if it can be done I'd prefer to take care of it myself.

Mine is doing the same thing and I'm just gonna replace the whole compressor. It doesn't look like it'll be a hard job, just a little time consuming. The compressor only cost about $200, so I figured just do the whole thing!

Same issue here, but here is the interesting thing. So my A/C stopped blowing cold air back in spring 2013 so I took it to a shop and they did the dye injector thing. After a week the A/C stopped blowing cold air again so I took it back to the shop, they checked it out and told me I will need to replace the lines due to holes. I said ok, I will ride the summer out and deal with it and maybe fix it the following summer, so for a year I rode with no A/C. Fast forward a year later, I decided to fix the A/C this year so I took it to a different shop near my house (best shop ever, small business owner, the best) and he did the dye and recharged my A/C again and ask me to bring it back once it ran out so he can locate the holes. Well, 3 weeks went by and the A/C was still strong but I took it back anyways and told him. He took it in and told me straight up: "Vinnie, your A/C is cold as $h!t, I wish my car A/C was that cold. I don't see any holes in any of the lines, your A/C looks fine. If it runs out, just come back and we'll see". It is now 4 months later and my A/C still working but I do hear that noise you guys are mentioning. My guess is that last year my A/C clutch seized or something, and now it came back to life, but this is sign of perhaps of it dying. I'm just glad my mechanic was honest enough and kept it straight unlike the other A-hole.

Is it easiest to access the compressor from above or go at it from underneath?

Dang...We own a shop and get a shop discount. I didn't even think about that when I was typing earlier!!
