Rattle only in gear

I'm hearing a rattle that sounds like metal BB's bouncing around in a metal can, that's the best way I can describe it. I only hear it when in gear at a drive-thru or against a wall. It only happens when idling, if I move the gear shifter into park the sound goes away. I climbed under the truck and none of the heat shields seem to be loose. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

It is a heat shield. it has to be. bc you described the exact situation that happened to me (metal bb sound, only in gear, very noticeable in drive throughs) . for me it was the drivers side UPPER heat shield on the exhaust. check the heat shields between the exhaust and the underside of the body.

yup same here, whae he said.

I also got it when the muffler started breaking apart and the muffler pipe was hitting the frame.

Yes, probably an exhaust issue. The FJ did it during high idle when the exhaust was barely rubbing a skid plate. Mine did it for the same reason I think.

I had this exact issue a couple years ago. I checked all the heat shields and, although a common culprit, mine were solid. It turned out to be a clamp on the back side of the converter that rusted apart at the bolt and started 'dancing' around on the pipe.
