rattling in transfer case?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a 3rd gen and the guy says his truck has a "Rattling" in the transfer case. What is the tell tell signs of that? And how much will that cost to fix? roughly so I can adjust it on the price.

I actually noticed a slight rattle in mine when I am in 2wd - i engage 4high and it goes away... i figure its just a little play in the engagement fork - hasnt granaded yet - dont see it doing that either.

Mine does this occasionally when coming from a stop as well. Turning up the radio seems to fix it.

Yeah mine does the same thing. Has no one found what it is. Goes away when I engage 4wd button on multi mode transfer case. Mostly from a stop and lower gears. 99 limited lifted 206k. Searching more into it tomorrow. couple thousand miles and nothing has failed and doesn't affect the driving. Beside the noise which sucks.

It's likely just slack developing in the tcase chain. I wouldn't worry about it.

TC dampner

When my TC rattled, turned out to be the dampner attached to the back of it, 2 bolts were very loose, s/b 28 ftlbs. Luck. :cowboy:
