Solve - May Help Others

After reading through a lot of posts regarding the rattles on 4th gens, I finally found my culprit.

The source of the rattle was loose A/C Compressor bolts. I poked around with a stethoscope and was able to pinpoint the issue.

The rattle was only present while in gear (drive or reverse) in the 500 to 1000 rpm range. Sometimes turning on the A/C made it go away, other times it didn't change it all.

If you hear metal rattling sounds only when driving and putting the gas on it a bit, what I call acceleration rattling then it is PROBABLY, but not 100% for sure, an exhaust leak or cracked welds somewhere on your exhaust system. The sounds I heard were a combination of whistling and metal rattle but only when in drive and only when putting a bit of gas on the throttle. For example when driving down freeway on cruise control at 65 the sound would not be pronounced at all but if I put some gas on it (just a moderate amount) to accelerate up to 75 then I will hear the sound as I speed up. The cause was the exhaust system.

Thanks so much for this. I hear a sound like a maraca or dry rice in a metal bowl Shhk-Shhk, usually only twice. It happens exactly at 2000 rpms when accelerating exactly at 68-69 mph.

Turns out mine was a part of the exhaust rattling that needed a bit of welding. Easy fix and the sound is gone.

I read none of this thread at all, but I had a horrible metallic rattling under acceleration 500 miles from home and after a 50 mile off road excursion so I naturally started to run through a list of potential catastrophes. I could really hear it when the sound bounced back off walls, etc. Pulled over and crawled all over it a few times. Of course, it was just the hitch receiver shackle mount. Wife was quite amused. Look at the simple things first. These things are tough.

Reviving a very old thread but I believe I could be experiencing this exact issue (fingers crossed it's not my transmission/torque convertor) but am hearing a very faint whistle sound and a metal rattling sound only when in drive and accelerating.

Where did your exhaust leak from and how did you end up resolving the issue?

Step 1, put in some 91/93 octane and see if the metal rattling is ping - the stock ECU ignores the knock sensors below ~3k RPM, so carbon build-up or other issues can cause ping at low RPM/high load.

Whistle can just be something in the intake system, so less of a worry.
