Rattling sound

Hey guys,
I have a rattling sound coming from under the car (front) when the car is in gear and the engine is between 1000rpm and 1100rpm. It only happens at low speeds and never at high speeds and almost sounds like a loose heat shield. I've checked the heat shields and couldn't find any cracks or breaks on the exhaust pipes. I couldn't find the timing chains though as I'm not mechanically knowledgeable enough to remove all the covers without messing something up. Anyone have any ideas as to what the noise could be?

Did you recently do the brakes? This might be your solution:

The second link shows the fix, i didn't post pics in my thread. I also posted a video of how to install the rattle clips on the brakes. It turns out the aftermarket rattle clips/springs don't place enough pressure on the pads and cause a rattling noise. However my rattling occurred mainly over bumps, not at high speeds so we may not have the same issue. Worth a shot though.

I actually did just do my brakes (about 1000mi ago), but they were the first thing I checked. I did find a heat shield that had made its way past a nut, but otherwise nothing is rattling when hit with a rubber mallet under my car. Gonna try a washer on the heat shield and see if it helps.

my front brakes did toyota dealer and they doesn't put these anti rattling springs on both calipers . I've just installed them today and it's great !
 
Its your exhaust. Either a hanger weld broke loose, or you need to tighten the bolts that connect your exhaust together.

Does it only do it in drive at idle, like at fast food windows or banks? If so then its a loose exhaust. Just tighten it up or take it to any shop and ask them to re-wield your hanger.

No, it's only when in gear and between 1000 and 1100rpm
 
Can you try to take a video of it? It wouldn't surprise me if that catalytic converters may be doing it. I've had cars that they rattled in the past because the insides essentially just... came apart lol...
 
Can you get under the front of the rig and bang on your front skid plate? Possible loose bolt or bolts (after an oil change perhaps??)
 
Just this past weekend I had almost the exact same sound. It was driving me crazy.

I got under the truck and found that the fasteners holding the heat shield around my catalytic converter had fallen out. I was able to fix in a few minutes.

So I figured out what the noise was. Took having my gf stand on the brakes while revving the engine to 1k rpm in gear with me under the truck to find, but the Exhaust Pipe Assembly Center gasket, bolts, and springs are all shot. $24 from Rock Auto to order replacement parts, hopefully a.) the bolts aren't too hard to remove as they're pretty rusted, and b.) that's actually the part that's making the noise.
 
I have a similar rattle (same RPM). Friend and I checked the heat shields and they are fine. Thanks for the info, gonna have it checked out! ........... driving me insane..........................

So I replaced the gasket, springs, and bolts now the noise is gone. The (metal) gasket totally disintegrated even I pulled the sections of the exhaust apart. 10 min of labor and $15 in parts.
 
This is the exact noise I just heard and couldnt figure it out for about 2 weeks. It started making it more often and I found the exhaust was JUST barely contacting the bud built skid plates in the same area. This confirms it
 
Have this exact problem in my 2006 4Runner 4.0L

Gonna have to climb under her and investigate.

It sounds like a combination of the exhaust hangers and the exhaust mating gaskets/hardware.

I was riding with the windows down in my 04 and I noticed a rattle towards the front of the truck, on acceleration that sounds similar to what yall were experiencing.

I tried a couple of tests. So far what I have narrowed down is that the rattle happens when I'm accelerating, in both 2wd and 4wd, only while in gear, and regardless of rpm.

I find the rattle interesting because when I put it in park and rev the engine the rattle is gone... I'd feel better if the rattle was still there regardless of what gear I was in which would point to heatshield....

It seems it s a bit different than what others have experienced but I didnt want to start a new thread just yet. What do you guys think?

Old thread but same as you posting for anyone else out there as well. 04 v8 and when in park and when in motion, nothing at all. In drive and at idle at a stop light, loud rattle.

Put thing in drive with parking brake and someone in there on brake and took a peak. It was this shield.
