RCV Axle Users - CV Boot Question

I realize these aren't widely used, but looking to see who else is running the RCV axles in their rigs. In particular, I was curious to know how your boots are holding up..

I bought these axles to have worry-free wheeling trips with my 35's, and even if I did break and axle, the life time warranty was very appealing. Shortly after installing my RCV axles I noticed that at full droop they were burping grease, not unheard off or a big deal.. so I replaced the factory clamps with worm-gear clamps (after getting the OK from the RCV team that this wouldn't void warranty for whatever funky reason).

A bit later, my drivers side boot developed a tear. I was pretty consistent with pumping in some of their RCV Molly grease regularly, and eventually got tired of doing so, and ordered replacement boots with more grease (not all that cheap.. probably $100 worth of materials all said and done). Replaced both outer boots and installed new wormgear clamps.

Long story short.. I developed another small tear in the boot which made me irritated.. it didn't hold up too long. It's possible that the wormgear clamp is causing the tear at full steering lock, though i've never had an issue with factory boots. Anyhow.. I've asked RCV a few times about the warranty, and every time I was assured that 9 times out of 10, if I didn't willfully destroy the axle, that they would stand by the warranty.. I feel like the drivers axle has a bit of a click to it under full load in 4-lo, but this was also there shortly after I got them installed so I can't confirm it has anything to do with the boot situation.

So I guess my question is what are you other fellas doing with your RCV axles? How have the boots held up? Has anyone had to replace axles because of boot failure/clicking under warranty? I don't want to get myself in a situation where for some reason my axle ends up failing and they deny warranty because I re-booted my own axles and "didn't follow the exact process" etc etc etc.

I'm late to the party, but yes!

I put on RCVs on my 5th gen 9/22 and by 4/23 I needed to replace tbe passenger outer boot.

RCV did cover, so that's cool. But still annoying right? I've never had a problem with OE boots/axles.

How has it been since you've posted? Did you dump RCV or has it been ok since you last looked?

Cheers,
Mike

Just put together a set of oem axles I found for cheap .. I’m pretty set on swapping the RCVs out and either selling them off cheap, or keeping the for future use if I end up doing any serious rock crawling on 37s where I would benefit from having them.

The boot since last time has torn.. yet… but both are looking very crusty and wouldn’t expect them to last too too long.

When you say RCV covered the boots, was this sending the axles over to them and having them replace the boots or what ? That’s pretty awesome if so.. I had to cover shipping part way and also pay for new boots when the cut them off to diagnose the clicking which ended up a warranty repair .. made no sense to me at all ..

Is it possible to run OEM boots on RCV axles? Best of both worlds...

That’s actually not a bad idea at all .. I doubt both boots would work since once of the cups are for sure larger and completely round vs the tulip that the oem axles have ..

Maybe you could use these boots instead? I have these on the inners and they have lasted over 50k miles on stock CVs so far. Still looking good too.

That would certainly work for the inner. I had OEM boot kits that I just slapped onto my OEM axles I picked up on ebay with the boot-stretch mod done to hopefully improve longevity. If these end up wearing I'll definitely see about switching out the inners for these.

By cover, I mean they sent me a replacement boot kit and grease, about $100 worth of stuff.

Then I pulled the axle and had a friend help me with it - it's good to have friends!
