Hi,
Considering a '05 T4R Ltd. Test drove a used '04 Ltd and it was fantastic but the stereo was lacking in clarity as if underpowered.

Does anyone know how many watts RMS the stock amp puts out into each of the ten speakers? As well, what is the impedance and sensitivity all the speakers?

BTW which aftermarket JBL model do the stock speakers resemble: GTO, GTI or Power speakers?

did you have the 'surround' button turned on on the audio screen? if i don't have the surround turned on my system sounds kinda crappy too, imo it makes a world of difference!
 
I have the 10 speaker JBL, and I agree it sounds a little puny. I checked out all the speakers and they work. The sub is really weak and the balance of the highs and lows is very poor on most of the speakers.

What the system needs is a good equalizer. On another post there is a freq response curve they the poster included. To my ears it is pretty close. A good drop off of the highs and almost no low bass, where the sub should kick in.

For $625 it isn't much, I doubt that the speakers are more than just some cheap replacement types by the way they sound.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think surround was on. I'm going back next week wth my fav cd and have another listen.

Anybody know if you can add a stronger amp/sub to the JBL system. I use to have a Dodge ( Infinity system) and without changing the whole system, new amp, you could not add a sub.
I also agree with everyone this sub is just too weak.
 
Search this forum and there have been several installations of amps
and subs, these are complete with pics.

The HeadUnit feeds 2 ch. sound to the amp which is behind the Rt.
Rear plastic panel in the rear. There is room to add another amp.
The stock HU controls the rear seat audio, balance and etc. remotely
from the amp. If you change the amp you will loose these features.
Others have added just another amp and Sub. Since the amp is in
the back it is a little hard to adjust the balance of an external sub.

It might just be easier to rip the whole system out and start over.
Then you could have a decent amp and equalizer.

What burns me is in my area you can't get a T4R SE without the JBL.
I would of preferred to get the standard radio and I would of junked
it just like I have done in all the rest of the cars and trucks I have owned,
then added a decent aftermarket system.

If you plan to rip out the whole system, you will need to rewire all of the speakers as they are wired from the AMP in the back of the truck, not the HU.

I must agree, the JBL system is not that good. I've heard worse, but for a 'premium' stereo upgrade, it is lacking.

I've had upgraded sound systems in previous cars (Nissan Bose, Ford Mach 360) and those were far superior.

Perhaps you can rip out the rear subwoofer, install a line-out converter and amp in that location, then run a sub box back in your storage area.... (I'm thinking of doing this)
 
I ehard a system today taht was done with all new speakers, all new amps but those amps were fed by using hi/lo converters off the stock amp. It is not teh best way but I hvae built SQ systems and it sounded dam good. You maintain all the controls of teh headunit, NAV etc, still should rewire the door speakers but it is a great comp.
 
Adding amp/sub

The JBL system lacks depth (bass) to me more than anything else. I added 2 Infinity perfect 12's along with an MTX 801D amp. Now it sounds so much better. Little nervous at first, considering this vehicle was brand new, tearing into it. Ended up purchasing the 2004 factory manuals. Just removed the right side deck trim side panel, removed the sub wiring connector, and connected the 4 wires to a LOC and then to the MTX.
The truck can be made to shake if you wanted!!!

I'd recommend going with the stock sound system and get a Scion HU. Made a world of difference in my 4Runner.

I've never heard the JBL system but the Scion HU can play MP3s as well and it sounds very good in the "Feel" mode. Lots of bass... maybe a bit too much.
 
I think the 10spk JBL system in my 2005 4Runner Sport V8 sounds great (only with the surround ON though)

It has plenty of highs, mids, and lows.....I will most likely upgrade the majority of it...but it is certainly not the "crappy system" that others call it. Sounds great for a factory setup. I do agree that it only sounds good with the surround ON.

I wonder if the '05 JBL system had an upgrade to the amp. In any event that is great news and hope to try one later next year.

Remember to use the bass, mid, and treble controls...i have the treble all the way up...and the mids up 1 and bass at 0 and it sounds really good..even on songs with heavy bass

with them set flat at 0...it sounds dull

Hi,

When I get a chance I'll try that. I think I heard it all set to zero except the bass was boosted up by the salesman which made everything sound muddy. ;):
