I am considering buying a 08 or 09 4 Runner and would like some feedback from owners regarding what sort of mileage to expect. I recently rented an 08 V6 SR5 4wd 4 runner in Jackson Hole Wy and got close to 27 mpg overall for a weeks driving to and thru Yellowstone, Tetons and in Jackson town --600 miles for the week. This seems too good to be true, but based on miles and gas replaced, the onboard computer seems accurate . I don't know if the altitude has anything to do with it. I live in AL and at about 600' rather than 6000'. Can I hope for anything close? If I chose a V8 (i have a 4500lb boat/trailer to tow) what would be reasonable? Thanks for all input.

I cant speak on the Toyota 4.7 V8 but I cant believe the mileage Im getting on my V6. I have 345 miles on it and over 1/4 tank left. Says 22.5 on the computer. This is on a NEW 4Runner, only 345 miles on the vehicle so engine isnt even close to broke in yet! Im very happy. Im coming from a 06 Jeep Hemi that got me 14-15mpg so gas mileage is a bonus along with everything else on the 4Runner
I have kept accurate records of fuel use since I got my '06 SR5 2WD. Mine will probably turn 60,000 next week. My mileage has been consistant but a bit disappointing. I absolutely love everything else about the T4R. I average in the mid 17's. I have only broken the 20 MPG barrier on two trips. When I say I 'broke 20' I mean like 20.1 on these two, all highway trips. Most of the time on road trips I get about 19.5 and I drive a fair nimber of hghway miles. It doesn't seem to matter how I drive. I even let (make) my wife use it for a week at a time to check mileage with her driving since she blames the poor mileage on my lead foot. No difference. To put it in perspective the V6 T4R is light years ahead of my V8 Dodge Dakota in every way possible including mileage (Dakota got about 12.5), comfort, towing power, handling, quality, dependability etc.
As for towing a 4500# boat the six cylinder can do it easily. I tow mine (about 4,200#) all the time without breaking a sweat. I grew up on Alabama lakes. Which one are you at and where do you live?

I'm getting about 19-20mpg overall average on my 4WD V6. About 85% of the driving is freeway. I've gotten high as 22.7 and as low as 15.7 for city driving. I'm pumping 87 only.
Most members say the trip computer is about 10% higher than actual, myself included. A couple members have said theirs is more accurate maybe within 2% difference of computer reported vs hand calculated.

There's so many variables it's hard to know. The mileage you got on vacation is NOT representative, it's high. My V6 in Florida averages just under 20. What I have found is if the outside temp is below 82 it does much better than if it's 87. During the cooler season I'll average almost 21. Very slow city driving uses lots of gas. Cruising faster than 67-70mph hurts it too. My everyday driving doesn't have a lot of either. Another factor is regional/seasonal fuel formulas.
The onboard lie-o-meter is approximately 10-12% to the highside for most people.
Rounding to the lowside I would say it's not unreasonable to expect 18 or better from a V6 4wd with a fairly light foot. A V6 2wd would be a little better.

As for the V6 , I love my V8 and am happy with my milage , but the V6 is a great motor and has good power . I personally if buying a new one would not care about getting either , but in this day and age if you can get something that gets a couple more mpg's and get good performance that you need the V6 would be a good choice. If you want better mileage than that , get a little car.

I have been tracking my mile on my 07 4WD Sport Edition since new. the worst I have gotten was 17.89 m/g and the best is 21.2 m/g. My average over 9000 miles is 19.6 m/g. My computer is is about 11% off like almost everyone else I have talked to. I do live in florida and the tallest hills I drive are the bridges I have to take to get to the barrier islands.. ;-)

I get about 11-12mpg with my V8 with strictly city driving. Granted I could get a little more by driving it easier, but I tried that, and driving like a granny maxed out the V8 at about 13.5Mpg with 100% city. I have a pretty big lift, larger tires, and other factors that come into play also.
