Really gummed up intake, under the intake manifold. Advice?

I gotta give you all a big thank you!

I'm done with this part of the engine work. Time will tell if the valves are sealed up (really crossing my fingers), but everything intake-related has been cleaned and reinstalled. It runs smooth and has plenty of power now! The roads are wet now... I took it out for a good run-in. With my foot hard on the gas, the tires spin in 1st, 2nd, and at the top of 3rd.

"Shooter", you may ask, "what was the cause of the misfire and rough running"? I'm a dork :) I traced the spark plug wires before I took the engine apart and, apparently, I got the connections wrong. When I put things together, I was using a flawed spark plug wire setup. I googled it and found the correct pattern. All fixed now :)

Good to hear. You're not a dork. It happens to the best of us. There's not one guy on here who's ever wrenched before that didn't make a mistake. Good job!

Well, glad you finally figured it out. Like Rock_Rat said, everyone makes mistakes, but the important thing is you persevered in the end. I don't know if you noticed, but the valve cover gasket video infamousRNR and I did has a schematic of the spark plug tube wire orientation in it. Drawing the plug wire orientation was one of the first notes I made as I was taking things apart on the engine and then Sean found that cool schematic that he added into the video for people to reference if they needed it. I enjoyed following your repair over the last month. Good luck with your future 4runner endeavors.

Thanks again, so much. Yes, I did see the spark plug wire diagram in your video. I drew my own anyways, but I guess I messed it up. I'm pretty happy with it, assuming that the oil leak doesn't come back. Still laughing at myself a little for my goof-up :)

Next job is timing belt, water pump, all related things, seals, accessory belts, flush and fill coolant, and then there's the power steering system, getting the sway bars back on, replacing the leaking exhaust, etc., etc.

Ha, mismatched spark plug wires......you are a dork! Hey, been there my dorkie self. Enjoy driving "the beast"!
When u do the timing belt, thermostat jiggle valve at at 6.

I've posted this here dozens of times--it's a nice pretty one:

Or just remember, the difference between the plug numbers is always THREE.

1-4, 2-5, 3-6.

I almost posted it for you, but you had a high idle and I did not think that would happen with a misroute. I got it wrong my first plug change and it just wouldn't start. So for my elucidation, did you misroute after the high idle or did that happen at the same time? I may need to adjust my thinking.

Thanks for the tip :) Yeah, I am really enjoying having it back on the road.

That is a very good wire diagram. Good tip about the difference of 3. I mis-routed before I did the initial start-up, so I had the high idle and the misfire at the same time. I actually drove it around the block that way, up a hill too.

I did this on my '82 Jeep Wagoneer a few years back. Was definitely a PITA.
I could get it to start, but (forgive my nerdiness here) it sounded like Sebulba's Pod Racer on Star Wars Episode 1. Youtube this and you'll hear how scary that noise would be coming from under your hood.

Interesting. Something must really confuse the ECM to cause that to happen. That's what I get for assuming.

I'd say two out of three times I tell a poster to recheck routing using that diagram they come back saying that was it. Of course, the the third guy is always offended I could think he got it wrong.

For the upper intake you can use brake fluid or intake cleaner while it's off. Wear glasses.

Dumb noobie question, following up on one of your repairs which now has some time behind it.
I am exactly at the point you were, parts in hand, ready to install the gaskets and close up.
At 269K did you consider replacing the knock sensors and replacing the contacts and plunger in the starter or did you let sleeping dogs lie/lay?
If not are they still going strong?
I'm at 245,500 on my 04 v8 and this is my FIRST what I consider more in-depth repair. Everything else have has been routine. Don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish while I have the intakes off.
Thank you!
