Rear Axle Leaking All Over! [pics]

As some of you may recall, I make a thread about my rear axle and how I thought it was the seal that blew..
Well It's getting worse and I need some input. It's ALL over the tire and shoe on the rear right. And now it's leaking out the bottom of the diff a bit. This needs fixing i'm assuming--
What do you guys think?

2 different leaks.

one looks like an axle seal, those are easy to change.

the other is either a pinion seal, or the 3rd member itself, cant tell from the position of the pic. either of those is a bit more difficult to fix, but still not too bad.


before you do anything, I would check the rear diff vent. make sure its clear and not clogged.

im guessing its clogged, and that's causing the leak.

..... just keep the fluid topped off, then nothing bad will ever happen.....you'll just make a mess. Open the diff bolt and stick your finger in there, if you can't feel fluid, fill her up til you can.

Check your breather. Sounds like it could be plugged.

The fluid on the bottom of the diff could be just be weeping at the drain plug or 3rd member. Oil likes to climb dirt. I would drain what fluid is in there, fix the weeping axle seal, then yank the third and clean the housing really well. Inspect it closely for damage - dents, cracks, loose studs, warped sealing surface, places where it may have rusted through, etc. If you don't see any of that, button it up with a new crush washer on the drain plug and black gasketmaker on the 3rd member, and then just watch it.

Whats the other side of the diff look like? The leak on the bottom looks like a bad pinion seal to me.

Yeah I think that's unfortunately going to have to be my resolve for now. I just don't have the time to pull anything apart at the moment.

I checked after draining and everything is in perfect cond. but that washer needs replacing.. thats why it's leaking out the drain plug. not a pinion problem.. [MENTION=69539]Hyde802[/MENTION] but I'll be delaying (unfortunately) the bearing and seal replacement.

The only thing that bugs me is that that rear brake shoe is just SOAKED in gear oil and it's almost useless.

Yup, you'll need to do a rear brake job. You can do it at the same time you replace the axle seal, should take you an afternoon to do both.
