rear axle seal?

Hey guys I decided to try and change my rear drum brakes a couple of weeks ago and i stumbled upon this when I took off my back passenger drum.:hurt:

And sorry about the crappy quality I would've taken a better one before I cleaned it out.

Now I've looked at threads on here before and I'm thoroughly confident that it's a blown real seal that has been neglected for A LONG time. The only reason I'm having doubts is the shear amount of sludge literally encasing everything and I haven't stumbled upon anybodies that has been nearly this bad or i'm blind and I can't see pictures well. But I'm just making sure that it's this before I go spend 500 dollars on parts that didn't need to be replaced.

And I have a picture of what it looks like after 3 cans of brake clean and about 7 pairs of gloves got me and I'm still not done.

But either way if it is my rear seal my main question would be because i've seen Bigfishallday's thread that he has on replacing them but I noticed that he absolutely goes and replaces everything. Is it one of those things that you should do while you have the whole rear end torn apart or is it really necessary. But any advice you guys could give me or if this looks like an entirely different problem any info you provide would be greatly appreciated!!

Looks like a really bad rear seal leak man..... check your diff fluid level, and add some if needed. If your diff fluid is fine, make sure you check the brake fluid.... might be a wheel cylinder that is leaking brake fluid too.....

Also, Bigfish's write up is more than accurate. I've accumulated all of the parts needed, but now have to save the money to have someone press the bearing off, and back on.

I've tried doing it the cheaper/easier way, and only changed the seal.... but it only lasts a year or two... and then leaks again.



Do yourself a favor... and do it right the first time...

I wasn't sure if everything else he did helped with the situation or if it was one of those things you just did because you had the whole thing torn apart like replacing the water pump when you replace a timing belt.

But hey thanks for the input it sounds like i'm going to go ahead and start accumulating parts to get this taken care of.

BTW are the seals and other parts required need to be ordered from toyota or can i go to like oreilly or autozone and get them?

Depends who you talk to, and what you're buying. Most folks around here, will tell you to buy only OEM parts.

I've gone and bought part store parts, and they do just as well. If you ask me....t's really up to you....
