Rear Axle

In the market for a new rear axle and I've been kind of searching around but haven't found anything definitive. Can anyone confirm that the 03-09 non XREAS axles are the same across all years? I've got a line on a 2003 axle with 100k miles on it fairly cheap. I know there's a difference in brakes between sr5 and sport/limited (16 vs 17) but as long as the rest of it's the same I can go grab this one since I'll just swap my current axle shafts and 3rd member into it.

Why, is your housing bent?

I don't see why they would be any different across the years, even the xreas ones should be the same.

Destroyed a lower shock mount and the housing is potentially bent. My last alignment numbers came back with all sorts of odd camber on the rear. I just did 5 days in death valley and it looked funky from the rear but otherwise drove okay. I've known the lower shock mount was bent, but didn't realize how bad it was until I went to swap on the new shocks. It completely destroyed the bushings on the shock.

So far the size of the brakes are the same across the board that I have found, as I've been searching for new rotor/brake pads for the rear.

No help here on your search though.

In my searching for a rear axle I never saw a distinction between model years/trim levels.

Diamond makes bolt on housings, might be a good resource to look for any differences between axles.

Figured I might run into a bigger brakes issue since I'm running 16" wheels but that's an easy fix. For all intents and purposes I can't think of a single reason why they would be different. Mostly I was just think about bracket mounts or coil perches being slightly different but I think I'm good.

Yeah I can't afford anything fancy right now. Gonna pick up this 2003 axle and go from there. Have some stuff welded on to reinforce the shock mounts and maybe gusset the axle itself some to keep from bending. I obviously abuse my truck more than most. Haha.

In theary should be the same Xreas/non, as when others up grade suspension and delete the system, parts are the same.

Front is the only criteria I found as far as size diffrence 16/17.

Aren't the gear ratios different between the V8 and V6?

Good point, but I think I can further clarify:

The 03'-04' V6's (with the 4 spd autos) got 3.91's.

Rest are 3.73; anything with the 5spd trans.

I forgot about that. That should be the only difference I can tell, other than brakes (Sports and some Limiteds). XREAS lines are routed directly from the shock to the frame, so no differences there.

Not that any of that matters as he will be swapping in his existing gearset.

03-2019 is all the same as far as bracket locations. the 03-09 4R housings and 06-09 FJ housings geared to 3.73 are 100% identical except e-locker housings. The only other thing to check for is spring perches instead of airbags

If I recall correctly, only the front brakes are larger, rears stayed the same regardless of trim. But if that turns out to be an issue it's a super quick swap to swap your current brakes since you'll be bleeding them anyway.

I know you said it wasn't really in the budget, but look at the 2010 FJ/4R 8.2" upgrade, axles bolts right in and if you play your cards right can do it under $2k locked and geared and is a substantial strength increase over the rear 8"

Forget the Diamond and Currie, get the ECGS low pinion D60. I should start a thread on these options to get somebody to buy the ECGS one before I do. So they can spec a driveshaft length for me to ship one to my door.

That's a really attractive option, didn't mention because of price. ($3000 min) Me and a couple buddies have been exploring that option, will likely purchase Spring 2019. $3000 for a locked and geared 9.75" rearend is dope, closer to the same $5k for a diamond if you don't use the stock shafts with the ox locker

Skimming the fjc thread now, but needs a different drive shaft for the 4R?

The D60 flange is different, but it also needs to be shortened due to the bigger axle.

How much shorter is the question, not sure of the differences between the FJ t-case and 4runner t-case, and other potential differences from the shorter FJ frame. I'm sure there is some wiggle room though, but if I could order an driveshaft in advance I could finish it in one weekend and wouldn't need a daily driver.

PS my brother is still waiting on his full float Diamond, nearly a year now. Probably the priciest option but one of the coolest. Work on their first production batch of axles is taking a while. The first full float rear end compatible with Toyota hubs.

I can't afford an $8k axle either. I realize the housing is like $2500 but if I'm going through the trouble I'm going chrome moly axles.

Pics of your damage? I try to be proactive about damage. I'm not willing to leave the road with these heavy wheels and tires without shock tower and spindles gussets.

Do you have a solid plan for gusseting the next axle housing?

I've been hoping someone would say that.

I've never owned a Jeep so I've never formally meet Dana but she seems nice enough.

Mount collapsed in the rear pushing the tube down then sometime later I smashed into the bolt which bent it. Attempts and bending it back into place failed and I eventually stripped out the inside of the tube trying to force the bolt and shock back on.

We're working on a gusset solution for the mounts vs a cut/replace mount. No clue how I'm going to gusset the axle from bending though. That's more of a trussing thing and will probably be further down the line.

I just spent 2500 on new shocks, upgraded axle just isn't in the cards. Haha. Wonder if I can sell the 3.91 3rd to ecgs to help off set this cost. I'm basically getting the axle for 600 with a 200 dollar core charge. 2 weeks to take my axle back.
