rear brake shims?

Hi there,

Quick question, I went to fix my local mechanics brake job after googling how easy it is.

pretty sure he used these brakes

Does it look there is an anti squeal preinstalled on the brake pad? When i opened it up it looked exactly like the picture in the link. if not should i go back and demand he put one?

I have yet to find the part number of the shim. do the oem brake pads come with? I keep finding the one for the front.

you don't use a shim on that brake pad. it's already there built into it.

are you having problems with the brakes?
if not, then don't mess with it. if they are squeaking, or otherwise having issues, take it back.

why would you pay someone to do a job, then go back behind them and do it yourself? you paid for a service, make sure you get what you paid for.

they are squeaking like crazy! I just ordered OEM pads and shims on amazon, should get in on friday.

I agree with you. I just don't trust their workmanship anymore, excessive torqueing of wheels, not disengaging the parking brake before taking the rear rotor off (may have damaged the parking brake) .

I'm going to try and have them just replace with OEM pads and grease everything up... if the squeaking goes away, im going to say poor quality parts you gave me, not my fault. take the parts back and don't charge me labor

did they resurface/replace the rotors?

and shims or not, I recommend a quality brake grease on the back of the pads. it helps to prevent squeaks.

no they didn't they said they don't resurface, just replace.

they didn't put brake grease, i opened up and checked. I did put some auto zone brake grease on the sides and all over the rear of the pad. Seemed to help a bit. when i put the brake pads in they didn't seem "lose" shakey, I assume they are suppose to be a little free right?

they shouldn't really be loose, no. they should fit snug/firm in the brackets, but not so tight that they cant retract when you let off the brake.

what type of squeak is it? only while braking? or while just driving?

but yes, I recommend resurfacing or replacing the rotors any time the pads are changed. plus new bracket hardware, and grease the contact points on the caliper. anywhere the pads touch the caliper, OR bracket.

both braking and while driving at low speeds, no brake applied.... I haven't ruled out parking brake damage, there is a thread on that... I haven't gotten a chance to open it up to see if its damaged.

edit: I didn't change out the mounting clips, i was hopping to save the 20 bucks, but I guess if i am going all out might as well change it.

I could have just change the calipers which included the new parts, then again those are not OEM. *sigh getting confusing*

I was wondering about that. I just did my rear pads, and the service manual didn't call for grease on the clips where the pads slide, but it seems like a good idea. I don't want to go back and re-do it now.


Try lightly applying the parking brake while you are driving and see if the squeak changes. Also, did you bed in the new pads? They might not work well until then.

I'm sure at your next oil change, or right before winter, it may be a good idea to go lub it up. Take it as a safety thing ? At last this way you can double check your work.

I have not bed in the new pads. What would be the best way. One way or another this weekend, rear brakes are getting OEM. and if it doesn't fix the issue im going to dealer on monday morning ,and having them fix it regardless of what it costs, i've been analyzing this for the past for at least 20-40 hours after work.
