Rear Bumper Removal

I downloaded the Service manual, what holds the bumper to the body behind the rear wheels. Is it the "claws"? How do you release these, I haven't been able to see them by pulling back the inner fender or lower plastic and looking up there.

I attached the part of the manual I was looking at.

after you remove both the rear mud flaps, and all of the bolts detailed in the rest of that section of the FSM, pull the panel at the rear of the wheels down and outward. the panel will pop right out. do the same on opposite side of vehicle, then work loose and pull panel outward from the tailgate area.

Thanks for the quick reply, due to the weather I think I'm going to wait until the weekend to tackle this one... Don't feel like riding motorcycle in 30 degree weather.
 
Grab it at the fender where it meets the sheet metal after all the bolts screws and push pins are removed). Pull outward clearing the edge of where the top bolt goes. It come out pretty easy. Do that to both sides to release then pull straight back to clear the tail lights. Very easy.
 
Remove the screws/bolts in the pictures, then go offroading over rocks. Eventually one will whack the bumper just right and take care of the problem.

[Seriously... just remove the screws/bolts in the pic and gently tug at the edges... the plastic "claws" will just pop loose]

Man, I got burned twice. Good use of the cat picture too. I wish I had a life like yours where I can have over 2,000 posts, most of which are very productive.

Honestly, I was a little hesitant at first when I went to take off my rear bumper, I really didnt want to break any of the clips and I wasnt sure how much pressure was needed to pop off the bumper. I started by removing all the screws that I thought were needed to take the bumper off, some of them dont have to be removed, some do, youll figure it out as you go along. The bumper actually popped off pretty easily, I remember just giving it a little bit of pressure straight outwards and it came off.

The one thing that no one mentions is there is a little plastic trim piece that surrounds where the metal latch is for the tail gate, this needs to be removed. I pried it up from the back of the trim piece and broke a clip that holds it on. You want to remove it from the front

How bout putting the bumper back on? Any gotchas? Do the little "claws" require any tricks to reattach or is it just a good whack?

Just use the palm of your hand or the side of a clenched fist to whack-tap them back into the claws/retaining track.

OK, before I get flamed, :flamethrwoer2: I searched every imaginable topic for bumpers. The pics look like an SR5. Does this method work for my Trail Offroad TRD Pro Limited Platinum? :confused:

Seriously, very helpful answers above. Was super easy, did it without a helper. After bolt removal, get each end popped loose, and then work it up off the tailgate catch. On my '15, the small plastic part came off with the bumper, no issue. There are a couple of bolts underneath the bumper as well. And take a look at the top mudflap bolt hole on each side: it pops out over a post that receives the screw.

Now, if I can just find a write-up with pics for the re-install! I do have a 20% off coupon for Harbor Freight if I need a BFH. (Big effin Hammer)

I recently R&R'd my '04's rear bumper to access rust areas.

I found that detaching the bumper sides from the body, where it is attached to a bracket with three pin-type clips, far more difficult to do than others have described. I, too, was fearful of breaking one or more clips off.

But with several attempts, each time more forcefully lifting up and jostling the bumper to free the pins from their holes in the mounting brackets, each side did finally lift up and detach. In my case, the plastic pins needed to be forcefully lifted, not pressed downward. (FYI, the bumper is very light weight.)

In the photo, you can see the holes where the pins slide down into the bracket on each side. (I applied blue painter's tape to avoid scratching the paint as I struggled to lift the pins from the bracket.) Re-attaching the bumper was indeed easy. (Removing the surface rust from the frame and various components was an awful job.)
