Rear Bumper Replacement

I just got the new rear bumper delivered last night by UPS. Took a look at it and it looks like a nice peice. Should be too hard to replace. Going to paint the inside of it first though.
 
I didn't buy the brackets, because I was told I didn't need them. The bumper did arrive and I have primed & painted the backside like someone here suggested.
Now the next question I have is what's the deal with the plastic bumper cover or retainer. I know the bolts that hold that are rusted as well. Did anyone have to buy a new one or can the old one be reused?

I will be replacing the bumper in a couple of weeks,so I would like to do everything at once.

I keep hearing that '96-"00's have three pieces to the bumper. On my '98 I dont' think this is true. It looks and feels like it is one solid piece.

I have a dent in the left size and am thinking about replacing the bumper. Wouldn't I have to replace the whole thing? Is it easy to do?

Anyone have a link to where I could buy one?

Edit: It's a Limited, if it makes any difference.

I have a 97 and have been told many times that it is a 3 piece bumper. I had a link to a place that you can find one, but i have since lost it.
When it comes time to change it, I'm going to go back to the dealer.I think it will be more expensive in the long run, but i just feel better about it.
I bought the Genuwine TRD exhaust that rusted.I brought it back to the dealer and they ordered a new one installed it and that was that. I wish they were not so expensive.
But oh well... I think for my bumper(3 pieces) when all is said and done it will be more that $400.

That is interesting. I will have to really inspect my bumper now.

I saw one on Ebay for like $100 shipped(it looked like one piece). I'm not sure how much a shop would charge to install it or if I could do it myself.
 
well i know you said you have a different year. 98 right? maybe the 98 DOES have a one piece bumper.. If it does then you might be in Luck... I can't help but think that the 3 pieces does not make it ANY less expensive, where one piece might be.

I'm glad you made a good choice. Ye I will need all 3 pieces when i do it - as well as a front bumper too... I guess where the water from the rain dripped from the hood onto the bumper over a period of time caused a small(on both sides of the hood naturally) caused a grey spot where the chrome was. There are many other bumper styles to choose from, but i think i'll keep it pretty stock- unless i see something i like better.

I have the same grey spots on my front bumper. It looks like oxidation of some kind. Not enough to replace though. Just had like $2,000 worth of work done to my truck. From timing chain,waterpump,valve cover gaskets,crank seals,front rotors & pads to my back bumper. This is the last hurrah for this truck, driving it till the wheels fall off and then it's time for a new truck.
 
I did check and you were right, it's three seperate pieces.

I can get the left side for about $55 shipped. Pretty good in my opinion.

How easy is it to install?

Thanks for the reply. I went that route not too long ago.. came in just under you@ 1500.00 I dont have any plans for getting ride of this truck- unless i have to. I want an M3 as a 2nd vehicle. I dont want 2 payments i bought my runner new in 97, she does not get much use I have a company car, So i will hold onto to her till forever.. I mean if i had to buy another truck tomorow it would be a sequioa $4 or not.. I like the room.. for hobbies and i hate the "laboring" i get with my runner when i tow my pop up and my jet ski. So when i get some extra cash i'll replace all 3 bumpers pieces..
She will have to last me for a long time.

I dont know how easy it is to replace, as i have never done it before. I think i saw a bolt or two under the mount.$55 is a very fair price... I dont think i got quite the same number from the dealer.

1996 4runner bumber is Rusty - Yo!

I live in PA and bought my 4runnerLTD off E-bay in 2004 from Texas. Over the last year from going to NC to the beach OBX, and living in PA (road salt) the rear chrome bumber in the center section has rusted and looks bad.

I am not mechanically inclined at all and wanted to know if I buy one off e-bay for around $150 + or -, how do I install it? What other parts do I need?

Does anyone have a link or can tell me step by step how to do it. After all I am just a disabled Army Vet and only know how to kill :boxer: people :vader:, not repair trucks..

Or where might I try in NE PA to get someone to do it for me and what would they charge?

It has 170K miles on it, but its overall in good mechanical shape and looks good for a 96 except the rusty bumber and rusty trailer, which I plan to hand sand and wire brush and spray can paint it with rust preventavive type black paint.

Just get under your truck and remove bolts that attach the bumper to the body until the bumper comes off. You may want to invest in some PBlaster if you have alot of rust as you describe.
 
Might not hurt to heat the bolts up either. If you snap the head off of 1 (or more) it'll be a b*tch to get the bumper lined back up.
