Rear cabin heater ?

Guys, I picked up a 1st gen 89 dlx. I have added sr5 interior and cluster. My noob question is about the rear heater. Is it catalytic or is it coolant heat? I want to install one but need to know what is supposed to be there.

Coolant lines run from the engine compartment to the rear heater.

Yep coolant lines. Friend of mine has an '86 with rear heat and mine doesn't. I'm glad I don't have it cause of the extra lines.

I just replaced most of my coolant hoses on my 3vze and IIRC they split off the lines on the back of the engine and then hit hard lines until they enter the cab just under the rear heater (not through the firewall). If you didn't already have the option you would need to track some the metal tubing and the necessary 'T' splitters. If you go this route, good luck finding many of the hoses. I had to go to the back of the parts store and find pre-shaped hose that would fit my needs. However, after I got all the air out of the system it worked great.

All you have to do is use coolant hose, doesn't need to be hard line.

Thanks guys, it seems that the T4R has the same basic setup as my land cruisers. I can grab the blower heater core unit out of the one at the junk yard and maybe the lines also. Again, thanks for the help.

I sent you the pics from my un****ing I had to do from the PO on my 89. In the stock location the lines run just above the exhaust until they enter the cab. I suppose you could use the coolant hoses as long as you keep them secured away from the exhaust pipe. Not sure, but it seems like you could snag the hard lines from a second gen (just shooting from the hip on that one).

Good luck with it and remember if you have a 3.0, you will want an incline to get all the air out of the system. :cheers:

get some 3/8 or 1/2 in tubing from local parts store (brake line or hydrolic works) you can use a regular manual brake tubing bender to bend it, basically just 2 90 degree bends, one at top in front of firewall and one under firewall to go back to core then mine has rubber coolant lines
I THINK they are 3/8 in lines.
my rear heat had stopped working and I had followed the lines from, like was said, above the exhaust right under the console then into the cab.
Mine were clogged.
ANYONE EVER USE CASCADE AS A COOLANT FLUSH? WORKED AWESOME... then i blew my rear heat lines out with air... they were clogged from all the sealer crap that was used by PO from HG leak.
