Rear center headrest

Anyone have any clever ideas for this? The wife sits there, flanked by two car seats.

I dont like the car seat in the middle of the 3rd gen because I cant get the base tight enough with that silly lap belt.

Drill holes, get the head rest plastics from a pick n pull and put them in place, done. Should be a really easy mod with a drill some glue and a 3rd head rest.

[emoji1] haha, yes. The front seat stays empty while the wife tends to the screaming 4 month old. And 3 year old that wants attention.

Although true story, I once bought a 12 pack of Dos and thought it would be funny to strap it in and post it on Instagram.

OP, do you want this for her comfort, or for a possible rear-end collision protection. If it's the latter, I suspect you will need to do some serious construction and lose the split-folding feature of the seat-backs. I think it would be easier to build a shoulder-strap-style seat belt for the middle seat.

True, i didnt consider this to be a safety feature when first replying but now that im looking back on it.. might want to make it a little better.

What about replacing the rear seat with one that fits, with 3 headrests already integrated?
 
Yes, more for rear-end whiplash protection. She was involved in a rear ender some years ago and is paranoid about it.

As for the other idea, i thought about rigging a new homestyle latch system but didnt think it was ever gonna fly with the wife. She is an RN certified in baby seat installs.

Personally, I think it would be much, much easier to build a solid restraint system to hold a child seat than it would be to construct a head restraint to protect someone's neck in a rear-end crash. Just bolting tow strapping into the base of the seat mounts, you could have a strap of webbing that would withhold thousands of pounds of force. In order to do a good head-restraint system, I would imagine it would require welding in a bar across the top-back of the rear seats. Not impossible, but you would be doing a lot of custom work.

Building something that is at least as strong as the current seatbelts in the vehicle wouldn't be that difficult.

Certainly not haha, The thought just never crossed my mind why she'd be back there tending to them. My parents just kinda sat my me and my younger brothers in and basically forgot about us. Maybe that's why my Teachers call me special. :confused:
 
Two car seats in the back of a 3rd gen? I can't even imagine an adult being able to sit in the middle seat.

Have you thought about a Sequoia?
 
Got a picture of 3 seats in the back? That's tight. I'm thinking a little buddies seat of another kid comes along.

She can't get the baby seat tight in the center seat?
Unless she just likes sitting inbetween your children so she can tend to both.

The center seat, I feel, is actually quite easy to get tight in our trucks.
Just put all your weight on said seat and pull the seat belt tight.

And please don't rig your own car seat installation.
 
I can't help with your wife's comfort, but since car seats are being heavily discussed and I highly value the safety of my children (and yours)...Toyota Part # 73709-12010 is a car seat tether that you can add to your rear cargo area to better secure your forward facing car seats.
 
I don't have a pic but I remember seeing something home made a few years back.

Basically the guy took a 2x4, drilled holes that matched the rear headrest posts.
Lift out the headrest and then put the post through the holes in the wood.
Each headrest held the wood in place between the seats and then he had some kind of home made headrest attached to the center.

Looked a bit weird but it worked.

You'd want to make sure and use the good tape for that setup.

Yeah, but I don't think that will protect someone's neck in a rear-end collision.
