Rear diff breather

This may be a stupid question. I am brand new to the 4x4 world. I noticed people with TRD pros an trails adding a rear diff breather. Is this something I can add to my SR5?

Yep, all the same and if you're going to wheel it in water it's a very good idea.

If you plan on off-roading that involves water crossings, not a bad idea. If you're going through puddles in the mall parking lot, probably not.

The stock breather has a little check valve inside. The idea is to let air out as the diff heats up and the everything expands. When you hit a nice pool of cold water it immediately cools down and pulls the valve close. However, if you do the auto equivalent of a cannon ball into a deep hole you get water over top of the breather before it has a chance to close the valve. In that case you can suck in some water.

Previous post said it best. If you're crawling the puddles on the way to the mall you don't need it. If water came over the hood your last time out and you're considering a snorkel, then better get it.

Diff breather kit

Here's what I did. Just slightly different than what other have done.
I ran the tube up into the gas cap area. Another option is the ARB filtered diff breather kit in the engine compartment with the tube run along the frame to the breather. You'll find the link to the breather kit in one of the links here.
You won't have the E-locker valve on your SR5.

I have never used one like that, but it may work.
I would rather have the diff without vacuum on it from temp changes during a water crossing. With the diff mods with out valves ( & using filters) it stays at ambient atmos pressure.

Today monsoon hit, streets were flooded however, puddles were like 8 inches deep. Everyone was going through (even 350z, sedans) and i was like well, I can't look like a ***** in my new 4runner. It was not enough to cover the pumpkin, but maybe if a spash or two were to go over the stub breather, would that be bad? Would i need to worry about it?

I did this except I have two lines. One for my Elocker and one for the diff.

OP don't waste your money on the arb kit. It is no more functional then this and I cringe everytime I see someone stoked about buying that kit.

Occasional brief dunkings are fine with the stock breather. You have nothing to be concerned about.
