Rear Differential Advice

After much discussion on this forum and confirmation from a Toyota mechanic I need a new/rebuilt rear differential as my pinions are starting to whine pretty loud especially during deceleration.
I have a 2000 3.4L with 5spd and a standard rear end (no locker).
I feel confident I can swap out the rear end but not rebuild the differential myself.
Any recommendations on who to get a rebuilt one from? I have heard that Marlin Crawler is pretty good, anyone dealt with them?
What other parts do I need to replace when I pull it all apart and remove the axles?

you can pull the 3rd, and take it to a local shop to be rebuilt. it will likely be cheaper than buying a new one.

unless downtime is a concern, and you need to have the new one, before you pull the old one.

like the guy above me said, could be easier to take it out yourself and deliver it to a driveline specialists to be rebuilt.

Marlin Crawler is a great company. Another company I suggest is East Coast Gear Supply. They'll have everything you need including full assembled diffs if you rather go that route. Will be a little more expensive and you'll have to pay a core (refundable upon returning your old one). As for parts, you can either buy a full master install kit which will replace all the bearings and stuff, or just a pinion install kit which keeps your existing carrier bearings and replaces the pinion bearings. If you do any kind of offroading you can take advantage of the situation and get a solid pinion bearing spacer as well.

I plan on taking it off myself, I just don't trust myself to set up the differential correctly after replacing the bearings. Downtime is not a problem, I will just have to drive my wife's Mustang GT :tongue:
I also figured if it was out might as well rebuild the whole thing not just the pinion bearings so was looking for someone who does rebuilds. I also don't trust nor know any good shops in my area.

yes, have all the bearings replaced.


I would just start calling around to different shops, and tell them what you need done.
Toyotas are some of the easiest to set up, due to their side adjusters, and the fact the 3rd comes out. because of that, I expect any reasonably sized shop would be able to do it.

Why not just throw a used unit in. Since it isn't an elocker it shouldn't be too hard to snag one in your area especially if someone has one sitting around post elocker transplant. If you are interested i have a 4.10 sitting in my garage.
