Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I can not speak for midcoma, so this it just me from past experiences.

The ROI, it takes lots of time and money to test out parts, to make sure they work and fit properly. Having a 3rd party doing the work and not being able to QC the parts before they are sent out are an big issue. On top of any liability for part failure is a massive risk these days in a litigation happy era. And it won't stop someone from stealing the design or file and copying it. On top of that so little people do this swap its not really worth it to make a dedicated kit. Also a reason I never post up pics of said bracketry, as it can be copied to cad very easily, and poof there goes my idea.

This is just my .00000002 cents worth (again adjusted for inflation).

Give me a little leeway here but if you aren't interested in marketing what you have come up with then why would you be worried about someone using your idea? I need to do the brake backing plates on the wifey's 2002 SR5 Sport sooner than later and if I am going to go to all that trouble it would be time better served to just retrofit disc brakes w/parking brake functionality.

Because it is something I designed, tested and made. Having someone else profit off my idea, well doesn't sit right with me regardless if I want to sell them or not. Learned that valuable lesson in my younger years. Never again will I let that happen. Nor design anything on company time too lol. But any ways, that's my thoughts behind it, agree or disagree we can still be friends lol.

Lots of us Canadians (we get the imports from Japan after 15 years as opposed to after 25 years in the US) have been swapping in the Prado axle housing to get the rear discs. They are setup like 4th gen rear discs with the E-brake setup built in.

I found a big solution to the ebrake problems for this set up. These calipers are 38mm and there is an upgrade to 43mm from a Taurus of a similar year range. I am still testing it and only put about 2 miles on the truck, but it does have better pedal feel and the best part is the e brake holds on a hill!!

I used the exact set up listed here just bought the parts from the cheapest places. But happy to report it makes. Bigger difference. I assume this will only improve as the pads bed in properly. Hopefully this will help some of you!

So I've got a 97 4runner that I'm wanting to do this conversion to. What's the cost of the kit and what all comes in the kit?
On a level 1-10 with 1 being hardest, how easy would this be to install?
Do I need to purchase anything else?
Do I keep my ebrake?

New Conversion Adapter Coming Soon?

While scrolling the internet last night before bed, I came across an IG reel talking about an adapter flange for Toyotas to convert from drums to disks, including our 3rd gens. They're still in final testing stage, but plan to officially announce at SEMA. Sounds like the first variant to be offered will be for 1st gen tacos in November, but the 4Runner shouldn't be far behind.

$1200 for the pair of adapters, and you will have to source the axles, rotors, calipers, etc. from a 4th or 5th gen 4Runner. They will also offer a kit with everything but the axles for an additional $5500. There will also be an adapter to tie in the 4/5G parking brake to the 3rd gen lever. ABS should also still work.

The website is still bare bones, but the videos I saw looked very interesting, I'm definitely going to keep an eye on these!

Well, I guess that is cool. But 1200 for a machined adapter is insane and 5500 for everything is in or above a t-case doubler. I don't even have 600 in my whole disc swap set up. Made my own brackets, uses 4th gen rotors, lc80 calipers, and wilwood parking brake calipers had to upgrade the booster/master to a lc80 complete set up. Which I didn't see them mention a change in master or booster. And yes, my abs still works.

Kit for sale

Hey yall.

Been my first post on here in a while but long story short I no longer have my 1998 4runner, I sold it and got a 05 4runner lol. But I wanted to reply to this thread and see if anyone wanted to purchase one of these kits off of me. I ended up getting my hands on one of these kits a while back from a user from this thread I think actually but never got around to installing it. It is used with maybe 100 miles on it. Everything is still practically brand new though. It's just been sitting in a box in my garage. the e-brake portion was never installed I have a full kit with all the brackets and hardware along with the e brake conversion kit. I would love to sell it to someone on here if they are interested. Let me know.
