Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I'm very interested on this but would like to know if this increases braking power over the factory drums?

The only way to know for sure would be to test braking distance before and after install, which I have not done. So I can't give you any factual, tested information.

Any chance that the conversion kits will come with rock shields for the rotor as a kit option? As small rocks can play hell on rotor and pads if they get in between the rotor and pad assembly.

I don't have any plans to provide a rock shield. I've heard of rocks getting stuck between backing plates and rotors, but never between pads and rotors. Have you had this happen? The pads are just about touching the rotors. That doesn't leave much room for rocks to get between them.

This is great though and it's a boon to the 3rd gen community.

T4R.org as a whole is just a whole different breed of enthusiasts. I'm rather surprised that companies such as Toyota don't get talent (Employees) from these forums.

Already have a manual one personally.

But there is the stock one already there as well..least on tacos.
 
Have you tried it on a 1st gen tacoma yet? Id be interested in a kit with ebrake.

This kit will fit a 1st Gen Tacoma axle. Does your Tacoma have ABS?

The parking brake assembly will work also, but it's a bit different for a Tacoma. I have it set up on my 1st Gen Tacoma using a 4Runner parking brake handle mounted between the seats. PM me and we can discuss it more.

I don't disagree with you; however, I'd love to hear what you have to say about running a proportioning valve on an ABS set-up.

My thought is that the ABS gets it's input from the axle shaft rotation and makes adjustments from there. Rear disc brakes don't change how the ABS system gets its input from the rear axle shaft. In my mind, the system will function as designed.

On my 4Runner, I deleted the ABS system and I do run a manual proportioning valve. But I don't think a proportioning valve is a required item for a kit designed to work with ABS.

This kit will fit a 1st Gen Tacoma axle. Does your Tacoma have ABS? If it does, these brackets will fit fine, if not, I can make brackets without the ABS cut-out. Take a look at the picture of the brackets laid out in the back of my 4Runner. The sets on the right are for non-ABS axle housings.

Truck had ABS but I ripped it out. Still has the sensors in there though. Likely change to a T100 axle in the future anyways. But ABS ones will be fine.

Will send a PM. looking at it I think it'll be easy enough to make the ebrake work.

Actually its rare but yes I had this happen. Not on a 4 runner but Camry and other vehicles. Granted the closer the pads sits the less this likely this can happen. I was just curious.. The rock climbers and heavy off-roading would know if this would be a benefit or not. I know they are on the front for a reason and it could be simply to keep the disc drier as I never thoroughly looked into it. :-)

I ripped out the whole ABS actuator too...

On a rig that still has ABS, the ABS computer will still receive the correct signals to detect wheel slip, but now ABS will be kicking in far, far more often for the rear brakes.

Further, the actual brake/ABS pulses will still be of the same strength (ABS system would assume drum brake power) and cause a longer duration of ABS activation. I still think a proportioning valve would benefit by reducing power sent to the now rear disk brakes.
 
Really looking forward to this kit, was going to rebuild my drums with new backing plates because mine are rusty but I'd much rather do this conversion and it will likely cost less.

I still have my abs system installed but it doesn't function because I don't have the front sensors hooked up, so I will probably take the opportunity to delete it entirely and install a proportioning valve

Would you recommend installing a residual valve as well to help with the issue of rotor runout pushing the piston back into the caliper and causing a soft pedal? and for anyone who has a residual valve, would you just attach it at the T fitting for the rear brake lines?

I am interested in seeing how much the parking brake kit will cost after you figure it out... I will probably buy both the brackets and the cable kit if reasonable. Subscribed!
 
I already have the disc brake setup on mine but am definitely interested in the parking brake cable kit if I can get it seperate.

Good job, this looks like a solid kit.
