Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Thankfully it's all wrapped in bubble wrap, because mine arrived looking like Ace Ventura delivered it.

Glad you're happy with them. One of the hard lines looks like it was bent in shipping. This section should be straight.



The copper-nickel should be easy to straighten out by hand.

Instructions are in progress. Trying to get them done ASAP. I'll post links to them on the main post when complete and put an update here.

anyone install this kit, and can give feedback on the performance? kit looks well made, and i am familiar with the cobra calipers having a 5.0 at one time and doing a conversion on my rear.

there are a bunch of member who have used the same calipers with custom made brackets. This is a T4R.ORG love child kit for sure. So not this kit exactly but almost exactly the same.

I can attest that this setup works well, the rear ABS seems to function exactly the same as the drums. If you ABS was working before you install it will work just fine after. the calipers are a good match for 3rd gens.

The only real difference is the amount of pressure needed to lockup the rear tires with the e-brake. with this kit your not going to be able to do that no more. nobody has solved that pickle yet.

I'm sure as others go thru the install they will share insights.

I shot this vid back in April, it's posted someplace back up in the thread. Yes you can lock up the rear with OEM drums. it's not a huge deal but with discs in the rear the extra force required to put enough pressure to stop the truck is reduced. Again not a deal breaker it's just good to know all the details when doing mods like this.

I wouldn’t count on it.
I’ve only had a chance to test my prototype, which was a crude model of the production junction bracket, but it didn’t lock up the tires while moving. The production version is much more refined and will work more smoothly, but overall it provides the same force.
What it does is exert more force on the caliper with less force required at the handle, making it easier to get adequate holding pressure. But I don’t think the Mustang calipers are designed to lock up the wheels. Especially when you get into much larger wheels, which increase the lever arm.


Let’s not forget about another key aspect, brake pads. If you have junk brake pads you’ll get junk output.
I used EBC Greenstuff with good results, but switched them to try a pad with less brake dust.
The pad I chose was the Hawk HPS. They were junk in my opinion. Horrible cold stopping power, which is what the parking brake will be, and they required too much pedal force. Noticeably more than the EBC pads. My wife though she was going to run into the garage door the first time she moved the car in the driveway.
When I get the 4Runner back together it will be running EBC Yellowstuff to see how they work.

I know some people are trying to get their brakes installed this weekend. I’m still working through instructions and will have at least a very detailed draft posted in the morning. If anyone needs the info sooner, send me a message and I’ll make sure you get the info you need.

No worries. Brake lines are easy to get straightened.

One thing that maybe we should do, is post up the additional parts needed (ie: calipers, pads, disc, etc.) so we can get a list of parts that function with this kit. There are a lot of options out there, so it would be nice to have an easy list that people can shop with.

Here is what I have:

Calipers: Power Stop #S4824A
Banjo Bolts: BrakeBest H9479-2
Brake Pads: BrakeBest Organic Rear Disc Brake Pads #D627
Brake Discs: BrakeBest Select Brake Rotor #96929RGS
Rear Axle Seals/Bearings: Marlin Crawler #MCAX-241 (vary's by year)
Brake Fluid and Gear Oil of your choice :drummer:

I didn't want to wait for the calipers I ordered to come in so I went to a Summit Racing store near me and got those exact same calipers.... they don't come with a banjo bolt so I had to go back to get some. Then the correct size did not want to thread in after getting started. Multiple employees and myself proceeded to go through every pair of those calipers there to find that only one single caliper would accept the banjo bolt. Manufacturers defect was what they ruled. PowerStop did not re-thread those after powder coating them. Don't know if they just had a bad batch or they all are like that. I would check it out before you get invested in the project. It was a headache for me and I am still waiting for my original purchase to come in.

Seriously, Thank you midcoma for taking the time and effort to make this happen! I will post more pictures once it is completed. I am also working on the parking brake kit too. Awesome directions on that, I definitely did not want to guess on the parking brake kit. Don't mind the wheel cylinder hanging around in the photo; I have a long steel braided line that runs from the T to the cylinder so I just plugged it back up with it.
 
PowerStop did not re-thread those after powder coating them.

You can always buy a bottoming tap and clean the threads up yourself. You shouldn’t have to, but it’s easier to buy them already coated than to get them coated yourself. Pretty sure the banjo is M10x1.0, but verify that before cutting any threads. Use some grease on the tap to catch the shavings and blow the hole out with air to remove the rest.




On a separate note, I just got a call from the shop producing my flex lines. Apparently my guy got in trouble for the last order I placed. His bosses are telling him that he has to charge $45-$50 for each of the flex lines ($90-$100 per pair). So needless to say, I’m back on the search for a shop that can make them at reasonable prices. :frusty:

After reading your post I ran out immediately to get the banjo bolts. Mine threaded up nice and easy. For reference, I ordered Powerstop rear calipers for a 1999 Mustang Cobra. The banjo bolt size is M10 x 1.5
